Powell's term as Fed chair ends

Ended on the statutory date; named chair pro tempore for the handover

"Powell's termination cannot come fast enough," the president posted in April of last year. Five days later he had "no intention" of firing him, "none whatsoever." In January the Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into the chair over the cost of a building renovation, and dropped it fourteen weeks later.

He served every day of his term and left on the date the statute set, with the Federal Reserve naming him chair pro tempore for the handover. Kevin Warsh was sworn in a week after that, with a term running to 2030. The only thing terminated on schedule was the sentence.

This page is a row in the futures file. It changes when the date does: set, then kept, moved or missed. A date that came due with nobody to settle it says so, in public, until somebody settles it. The whole timeline runs at the foot of the front page.
