A decade ago the fight over an air base wasn't who bombs from it — it was who gets to. The lesson held past that argument: an air base is never just tarmac, it is a claim about whose war this actually is, and the host country answers for it.
Britain is answering for it now. On September 1, Novara Media reported that just under half of all UK terrorism arrests since the September 11 attacks — 3,021 of 6,539 — landed in the twelve months ending that March, the same stretch in which Parliament proscribed Palestine Action.
Eight days later, on September 23, Manchester police arrested two men under the Terrorism Act over a plot the Met said targeted the city's Jewish community ahead of Yom Kippur, forensic teams working a white Mercedes on Newton Street.
Four days after that, on Sunday, the target became the machinery itself. Five men were arrested near RAF Fairford under the Explosives Act, the base Britain has let the United States fly Iran strikes from since February. Bomb disposal units searched vans parked near the perimeter, and the wire called it, flatly, a "major incident" — the driest phrase in the language for what everyone on those streets had just watched arrive at their own doorway.
None of it required a conspiracy to arrange. It required a supply chain: a base that flies one war, a government that is arming the next one, and a decade in which the base keeps ending up inside the blast radius the arms were supposed to stay outside of. Fairford wasn't targeted despite the $2.8 billion package. It was targeted inside the same window the package was still being finalized — the sale and the plot sitting, for now, twelve days apart on the same map.

I wrote down five things this week, in the order they crossed the wire, and I'm going to read them flat and then stop, because that's the whole point of writing them down in the first place.
The president turned down Iran's offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. On Tuesday the twenty-second, he told reporters his own officials had just spent three hours in a room with Iran's delegation at the United Nations — a "very good meeting, very productive meeting," he said, and I wrote it down that way, in his words. That same day, in his speech to the General Assembly, he said he could annihilate the Islamic Republic if there's no peace deal, and that a settlement might come after the midterms. On the twenty-third, a bipartisan group of senators disclosed a letter to Secretary Rubio about an American journalist held in Iran — sent, the report said, one day before that same three-hour meeting. And today, the Secretary said Tehran is miscalculating by betting on the midterms for a deal he says doesn't exist.
That's the list. I said I'd stop there, and I did.
Three hours. That's the number I keep coming back to, and I should tell you now, so it doesn't catch you by surprise later, that I'm going to come back to it once more before I'm done.
Here's why. I was at the bank Thursday, about the car — it needs a fan belt again, and I wanted to move some money around before I dealt with that — and the loan officer told me no over the phone before I even got there, flat, don't bother coming in. I went anyway, because you keep the appointment you made, and I sat across from her for three hours going through the paperwork, line by line. Is that a meeting about a loan? Or is it a meeting about a loan that had already been told no? I don't know how a man standing outside the door would tell the difference. What do you call three hours spent on something that, an hour before it started, somebody already said wasn't happening?
How many hours did our officials sit with Iran's delegation at that table, after the offer was turned down? Three. What did the president call it, when a reporter asked him about it? A very good meeting, a very productive meeting. What does the Secretary call it when a country keeps waiting, past all that, into the midterms, for a deal he says isn't there? Miscalculating. And what do you call the three hours somebody spends going over the terms of a deal that isn't there?
I've also got the letter the senators sent the Secretary about the reporter Iran is holding — sent, by their account, one day before that same meeting, not the day after. I don't know if the reporter came up in the room. I only know which one reached my desk first.
I was closing the notebook — the fan belt isn't going to fix itself, and neither am I — when I remembered one more thing, so forgive me for turning back at the door. The Secretary's word was miscalculating, for a country betting on a deal that, in his telling, doesn't exist. What I've got written down, from earlier that same week, same delegation, is a different number, and I'm sorry, I already gave it to you once. Three hours is what a hundred and eighty minutes comes to. Which one of them was miscalculating? I only know how long it took to sit there and find out — three hours.

I keep a finger on the line and read these in the order they were filed.
September 19. The President posts to Truth Social that he will form an "AI Force" and name a "czar" to run it. He calls the absence of federal guardrails a "hoax" and promises the industry no "decimation."
September 23. The Washington Examiner asks Washington to hold off handing over that force until it can stop one rogue agent. The piece notes that, as of September 22, public reporting still has not established where the office would sit, what authority it would hold, or which mission would separate it from the agencies already doing this work. Three questions, filed together, unanswered together.
September 24. Bill Gates goes on Meet the Press and says artificial intelligence is "powerful enough" to cause "a billion deaths." He asks for government safeguards. The office meant to provide them still has no address and no name on the door.
This week, two more filings land the same day.
The New York Post reports a shortlist has finally surfaced for the job — the second-ever chief of a "trillion-dollar industry in tumult," several current and former administration insiders rumored to be in the running. All together now: an industry measured in trillions, a search that took over a week just to produce names, for a seat that as of the 22nd still had no stated authority.
NBC has Gates again, telling the network that getting countries to agree on AI rules will be harder than it was during the Cold War. He is not speaking about the billion-deaths remark in the abstract. He is speaking about a coordination problem, and noting that the same government still has not solved the easier, smaller version of it: naming one person to run one office.
The office meant to staff the American side of it is still taking applications. I am not being unkind about the sequence. I am reading it in the order it was filed.

On August 31st three Democrats running for Congress — Marni Von Wilpert in California, Christina Hines in Michigan, Zach Dembo in Kentucky — sat on CBS's "The Takeout," said they were confident heading into the midterms, and argued about what the party should be. The House answered the next day. On September 1st it passed a nonbinding resolution condemning socialism and calling for passage of the SAVE America Act, 220 to 192, with eight Democrats voting yes and two declining to vote at all. That is one theory of what a Democrat runs on: sprint at the word the other side picked, and hope it sticks to somebody else in the caucus.
The competing theory was being priced in Texas the same week. On September 5th Republicans in Washington were, in print, stuck with their own Senate nominee. On September 9th Ken Paxton, still the state's attorney general, announced a settlement sending more than seven million free eggs to Texans, 1.7 million delivered and 5.3 million on the way, his name on the release. On September 14th the Senate Leadership Fund's Texas committee filed for $53.8 million into his campaign. On September 16th the Texas Farm Bureau endorsed him. Counting the battleground money moving alongside it, the wire's running total for what it calls the Paxton rescue mission had cleared $100 million by the end of last week — and The Hill's forecasters say the Democratic advantage in the polling has not moved for any of it.
On September 17th The Hill described what that money is aimed at: a seminarian. State Representative James Talarico says his faith is the reason he entered the race and argues that Christian doctrine affirms the progressive policies he supports, and the contest is now a public fight over what the paper called the state's political DNA. Nobody bought that position. It was free.
Which brings us to this morning, and to Kansas, where Adam Hamilton — a pastor, in a tight Senate race — is challenging party lines by asking out loud whether Jesus was woke. NPR counted the rest of them the same day: it is rare for Democrats to put religion at the center of a campaign, and this cycle a number of candidates for Congress are doing exactly that. This is not one preacher with a microphone. It is a slate, in Kansas and Texas and the House races, betting that the party's problem was never the socialism vote and never the consultants' rule about keeping the pulpit out of the ad buy.
One side is spending $100 million in Texas. The other is asking, in Kansas, whether Jesus was woke. Both are on the same ballot. Only one of them has to be paid for.

In 2016 the Washington Post caught Iran quietly telling Russia to stop flying sorties out of an Iranian air base — the arrangement was drawing "unwanted publicity." That's the shape of what an air base is: not tarmac, but a claim about whose war this actually is, and someone answers for hosting it. Ten years later, Britain is the one answering.
At RAF Fairford, the base that flies U.S. strikes on Iran, five men were arrested and stripped down this weekend on suspicion of planning van bombings. Homes near the base were evacuated, bomb squads searched vehicles, and British police called it a major incident. It landed twelve days after Washington moved to approve another sale of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel — the same ordnance, the same client, the same war, just now the plot sits on the doorstep instead of the invoice.
It also landed inside a pattern nobody needed to invent. On September 1, Novara Media reported that 3,021 of the 6,539 terrorism arrests logged in Britain since the September 11 attacks — nearly half — came in the twelve months ending that March, the same stretch in which Parliament proscribed Palestine Action. Three weeks later, on September 23, Manchester police arrested two men under the Terrorism Act over a plot the Met tied to the same target list Fairford now joins.
Then the anniversary caught up with the argument. On September 10, the journalist Spencer Ackerman, on Democracy Now! discussing his book on the twenty-five years since September 11, put it this way: "The 'war on terror' was always a construct to be waged, never quite to be ended." The next day, at the Pentagon, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the attacks that killed roughly 3,000 Americans, in a ceremony that also drew War Secretary Pete Hegseth and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Sixteen days after that, on September 27, the president gave Ackerman his citation without meaning to. A British counterterrorism case, hours old, arrested under British law by British police, got folded into the same sentence as an American president's own war — offered as proof the instant it became useful.
That's the trick running under the last twenty-five years of this. The war doesn't need new evidence supplied. It only needs someone at a podium willing to claim whatever happens next as confirmation.

Let me just read you the order of things, the way they came in off the wire, and then I'll stop for a second.
On the twenty-fifth of August, the United States said it would widen the economic war on Iran to hit Tehran's biggest trading partners too, China included. On the twenty-second of September, the President said he'd sat for three hours with Iranian officials at the United Nations — a very good meeting, he called it, very productive. On the twenty-third, Iran's president told that same United Nations that the United States and Israel are the real terrorists, and an Iranian-American journalist said the President had promised either to annihilate Iran or cut a deal with it after the midterms. On the twenty-sixth, Russia's foreign minister tore into the United States at the same podium, and Russia, China, Iran, and Cuba ended up standing together in the same speech. On the twenty-seventh, a Sunday, Iran put a seven-day plan on the table to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The President rejected it.
That's the list. That's everything I've got written down for that stretch. I'm going to stop there and sit with the last one, because that's the one with two accounts of the same rejection, side by side.
I pass a toll plaza most mornings, the one before the bridge, and you know how that works — you put money on the transponder before you drive through, not after. Mike Waltz, our man at the U.N., said Sunday that the President turned Iran down because "they were asking for everything up front" — relief, he said, from billions and billions of sanctions going into place as something called Operation Economic Fury. That's the toll-plaza arrangement — pay first, drive after. I wrote that down because it's a specific claim. Somebody asked for something, in advance, and that's given as the reason the answer was no.
Except the same day, Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said his own thing about that same rejection, and I don't see the toll plaza anywhere in it. What I see is him calling the seven-day plan "a very reasonable plan on the table" — his words — and, separately, telling the Times that the President's own history of contradictory messaging means the rejection might not be his last word on it. Not a sentence in there about billions owed before anything given back. In that same set of remarks, he also said Iran is ready for what he called a doomsday war, and that Iran still doesn't want one. Both of those, from him, the same day.
Five days before all of that, the administration sat in a room with these same Iranian officials for three hours. The President called it very good. Very productive. I don't know what got said in that room. I do know that five days later, the same talks ended in a rejection, a reason for it from a man who wasn't in the room, Ambassador Waltz, and an answer to that reason from the man who was, Araghchi, who doesn't mention the thing he's accused of asking for.
Oh — one more thing before you go, and I'm sorry, I know I keep circling back to it: Waltz says that's what Iran wanted, all of it, before anything came back. Araghchi, in his own words, talks about a reasonable plan and a history of mixed signals — not one sentence about anything owed in advance. So where, in what he actually said, does he ask for it all up front?

Here's the list, in the order it came off the wire. I'm going to read it flat, because reading it flat is the whole argument I've got today.
New York Times, September twenty-fourth: Mary Peltola's congressional office and Senate campaign, described as "rocked by tumult, with angry outbursts and slurs."
Washington Examiner, the same day, writing up that Times report: the campaign says claims that she berated aides, used slurs, and shoved an employee reflect her "shouldering the enormous burden of grief."
The Hill, also that day: the campaign "rips" the Times account; former aides had told the Times about profane outbursts and displays of anger.
New York Times, September twenty-seventh: "She's One of Us."
That's the list. Four items. I'm stopping there, because the minute I start adding my own words to it, it stops being the list and starts being my opinion, and nobody's paying me for that.
Here's a number I keep coming back to: three. Three days, September twenty-fourth to September twenty-seventh, by the paper's own dates.
I drive a car that needs a fan belt and hasn't gotten one, past the same toll plaza most mornings, three lanes, and I keep a stack of receipts in the glovebox I can't throw out, because you never know when somebody's going to ask you to prove what you already told them. The belt squeals on cold mornings, and I still haven't fixed it, same as I haven't gotten around to a lot of things this year. That's not a complaint. That's just where I keep things.
Does the statement about grief — the shouldering, the enormous burden — go out on its own, ahead of the Times report, or does it go out the same day, answering it? The dates say the same day, answering it. I'm not telling you what that means. I'm telling you what day it is.
Does The Hill's own account, filed that same day, use the word grief anywhere in it? Go back and read it — it doesn't. It has the pushback, and it has the aides' own words for what they said happened: profane outbursts, displays of anger. Same event, same day, two papers, and only one of them reaches for grief. I don't know why. I'm not in that newsroom. I'm just telling you what ran where.
And does "she's one of us" run in the same newspaper, about the same person, in the same week as "angry outbursts and slurs"? It does. Three days apart. That's the number again — I said I'd only come back to it once, and here I am, so I apologize — but three days is three days, however I say it.
Excuse me — before you go, one more thing, and I'm sorry, I told you I was finished. The grief in that statement, the mother and the husband, both lost in twenty twenty-three, by the campaign's own account — is that named in the same statement that addresses the shoving, or a separate one? I only ask because that's the whole shape of this: the loss and the incident, filed side by side, the same way the report and the profile ended up filed three days apart. Three days.

Garvaghy Road, the route through a nationalist stretch of Portadown that was a flashpoint of lethal violence in the 1990s, had not carried an Orange Order march since before the Good Friday Agreement. Twenty-eight years, then a late-night sitting, then a green light. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called for calm on Sunday. That is the whole of what he is on record saying.
Thirteen days earlier, in a room the court's ruling did not touch, three first ministers signed a document. The memorandum they produced carried, in the Washington Examiner's own words, "bellicose language but few concrete promises for withdrawal." A warning that the United Kingdom is coming apart, with the paperwork for coming apart left for later.
Compare what each sitting produced. The court's late-night sitting produced a dated ruling: a road, a route, a green light. The first ministers' sitting, thirteen days before it, produced a memorandum and a headline. One gave an actual answer. The other gave a warning without the promises to back it.
Then Saturday, while Belfast's court order was still being read out, Rhun ap Iorwerth — the same first minister who signed that memorandum — stood in Aberystwyth in front of the first march for independence that town has ever hosted, organized by YesCymru and AUOBCymru, and said there is no turning back, and that the next step is equality with Scotland "as a minimum."
Run the two facts side by side. In 2022, Sinn Féin won the most seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly, the first time a unionist party had not finished first since the state was founded in 1921. Four years later, the road that was the flashpoint of the old order gets its march back the same weekend the new order marches for the exit. Nobody signed anything ordering these two things to land on the same weekend. They just did. That is the part of this that should worry you more than either story alone: a court restoring the old arrangement and three governments rehearsing its replacement, on the same calendar, without a single document connecting the two.
