Consequence — the working assumption that a finding of fact obliges somebody to answer for it — died this month. The cause of death was a notice in the Federal Register.
It had a long and unremarkable life, and its last weeks are easy to lay out in order. In late August the country learned that the war the President had said would be quick was six months old with, in the reporting, no end in sight. On the first of September the bombing campaign restarted and the President warned Iran that any retaliation would be answered "at a much harder and higher level." On the ninth he allowed that the war would not end before the midterms, which is the sort of scheduling note a man makes about a thing he means to keep. On the tenth the Defense Secretary went on camera to describe the devastation done to Iran's capabilities. On the eleventh he and the President stood at the Pentagon and tied this war to September 11, 2001.
The bills came in behind the speeches. On the fifteenth the Congressional Budget Office priced the war at nearly $40 billion and called that estimate conservative, conservative being what budget people say when the real number is worse and they would rather wait. Forty billion is not penny-ante money. A United Nations inquiry found the strikes already flown were likely war crimes. Senators came out of a Pentagon briefing frustrated. Senate Democrats demanded to be told what the fighting costs. A senator who voted to confirm the Defense Secretary has called for his firing twice this month. A Republican congressman filed impeachment paperwork against him. Four institutions, doing the one thing they are built to do.
Here is what came back. The Pentagon has stood up a Homeland Defense Board, announced in the Federal Register on September 11 and first reported by Defense News — the department's first advisory panel of its kind — and the Defense Secretary will chair it. The Federal Register on the eleventh, the cameras at the Pentagon on the eleventh. That is where this shit goes on the day the microphones are pointed somewhere else.
Consequence is preceded in death by "quick" and by "over before the midterms." It is survived by the Federal Register notice, which printed what it was handed, and by the chairmanship, which is not contingent on the finding, the frustration, the firing demands, or the filing.
It is also survived by the geography. On Monday Iran said a new assault would be met with different weapons in new places, while the President touted a looming decision on his next move. The $40 billion does not cover that. That is the next invoice.
In lieu of flowers, ask your own member of Congress what this war has cost to date and make them say the number out loud.

THE COST
By MortThe Records Bureau · the breakfast edition, 22 September 2026
Accountability for how this war is fought died this week, at the age of one finding. The cause was arithmetic.
It was born as a promise that the thing would be quick. By August 28 the war was six months old with no end in sight, which is a phrase you use about weather, not policy. On September 9 the President admitted the war would not end before the midterms, delivered as a scheduling note. On the 10th the defense secretary went on camera to describe the devastation to Iran's capabilities. On the 15th the Congressional Budget Office put the bill at nearly $40 billion and called its own number conservative, which is budget-office for: more. That is no penny-ante sum. That is a figure they cannot find for anything else.
Then, on the 17th, the United Nations fact-finding mission on Iran said it had reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes in two airstrikes: the Shajareh Tayyebeh School in Minab, and a sports complex and residential area. At least 178 civilians. One hundred twenty of them children, according to Iranian authorities. The same mission found Iran's own government carried out crimes against humanity against its own citizens during the crackdown on protesters earlier this year, so nobody gets to file the whole document under bunk from a partisan outfit. The findings are set to go before the Human Rights Council. CBS carried them again this week.
Here is the part where a system is supposed to catch.
A senator who voted to confirm the defense secretary called for his firing for the second time this month. Senators came out of a Pentagon briefing frustrated. Senate Democrats demanded a full accounting of what the war has cost. A quick war now six months old, at forty billion dollars and climbing, with a school in the findings, is a shit hand dealt to everyone who did not deal it.
Accountability is survived by the households of Minab and Lamerd, who did not need a mission to tell them what fell; by every taxpayer carrying forty billion dollars of it; and by the frustrated senators, who have a vote and a subpoena power and used neither this week.
It was preceded in death by the promise of a short war, and by the old notion that confirming a man makes you answerable for him. That second one went quietly, in the same week, and no one has claimed the body.
In lieu of flowers: put it to your own member of Congress in writing — what did the two strikes hit, and what has the whole thing cost — and keep whatever comes back, or the silence, until November.

The promise of a swift end to the Iran war, born the week American strikes began, died for the second time this month. The first funeral ran on September 9th, when the President admitted publicly the war would not be over before the midterms. The second ran this week, at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly, where he told diplomats he would either strike a deal with Iran or, in his own word, "annihilate" the country.
It was preceded in death, in August, by the Pentagon's own count. On the 25th, a government official told The Intercept that the department's tally of the war's wounded amounted to what the official called "an accounting trick," a polite phrase for old-fashioned hogwash. Whatever the department calls its arithmetic, the count is still shit, and it keeps climbing regardless: casualties now stand past 850, with 66 more service members reported wounded this month alone.
It is survived by two Senate candidates, Ashley Hinson and Mike Rogers, who broke with the President this week to call for a swift end to the war before Election Day, and by Senator Jon Husted, who told Politico the war "needs to come to an end as quickly as possible." NBC's political desk reports the defections piling up, a party discovering midterm math the hard way, with the same party also warning of high prices at home.
None of it has closed the account. The war stands at $40 billion, by the Congressional Budget Office's own conservative estimate, over strikes a United Nations inquiry found were likely war crimes, run by a secretary the President's own party has asked him twice this month to fire. Only the promise that any of it would end on an election-friendly schedule has died — twice, in the same month — while the casualty count and the invoice kept their own schedule.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that anyone still waiting for a swift end to a war stop waiting on the calendar to do what only a vote can.

THE AMBITION TO OWN GREENLAND OUTRIGHT died this week at the signing table, survived by a memorandum. It was twenty months old.
It was born in a boast. In January 2025, the President declared that "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," a phrase urgent enough that his son flew to Nuuk within weeks to look the island over in person — a scouting trip for a country that was not for sale and did not, as it turned out, need scouting. The Danish prime minister met the visit with the only sentence a head of government needed: "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders." That was the whole argument, delivered twenty months early.
The ambition spent the year loudly, in public, waiting for the receipts to catch up. Foreign policy experts who had dismissed the annexation talk as unrealistic found themselves, by September, watching Beijing stop laughing at it, which is a different thing from watching it happen. On September 18th the President announced the payoff: a deal giving the United States "permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns." Two days later, the people paid to read agreements for a living called it "largely a rebranding of the status quo to claim a win." By the time the New York Times got around to it, the verdict had a headline of its own: he settled for something much less.
Both things are true, which is the whole trick of a memorandum — you can restate NATO-era security arrangements in capital letters and call it permanent control, and nobody has to be lying. That is not hogwash exactly. It is malarkey with a signature page.
The ambition to own Greenland outright is survived by a security memorandum, a press release, and a son's travel receipts. It is preceded in death by every Greenlander who watched a foreign son inspect their country like a car on a lot, and answered, correctly, that it wasn't his to buy.
In lieu of flowers, ask what the memorandum restates that the old treaties didn't already cover.

THE AMBITION TO OWN GREENLAND OUTRIGHT died this week, survived by a memorandum. It was twenty months old. It was born in January 2025, when President Trump declared that "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." The claim was urgent enough that his son, Donald Trump Jr., flew to Nuuk within weeks for a personal scouting trip, on an island that was not for sale and did not, as it turned out, need scouting. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen answered with the only sentence a head of government needed: "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders." That was the whole argument, delivered twenty months early.
The ambition kept the promise alive on paper. On September 18, Trump announced a security deal he said would give the United States "permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns." Ownership had become access, though the announcement still wore ownership's language.
The next day the record caught up with the language. Foreign policy experts and critics had called the renewed acquisition demand entirely unrealistic when Trump revived it earlier this year; Beijing, the Washington Examiner reported on September 19, was no longer laughing at the arrangement that resulted. On September 20, Danish and international commentators went further, dismissing the "permanent control" claim as, in one description, "largely a rebranding of the status quo to claim a win" — a repackaging of standing agreements, sold as a foreign policy victory.
This week the paper of record filed the death certificate. The New York Times reported that Trump, who once vowed to own Greenland outright, settled for something much less — a security deal that falls well short of his demands to turn the island into U.S. territory.
The ambition is survived by a security memorandum, a scouting trip that scouted nothing, and a phrase — "absolute necessity" — that outlived its object. It is preceded in death by the plan's own timeline, which never once produced a deed, a flag, or a purchase price. It leaves behind a Prime Minister's sentence that needed no revision in twenty months.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that the next territorial ambition be measured against the deed before the announcement, not after.

Let me be clear about what the filing does and does not say.
The Justice Department went into federal court and made a narrow argument: that reporting from CNN, MS NOW and Politico raises national security concerns, and that the journalists involved failed to act with "professionalism and decorum." That is a standards case. Standards cases are boring. That you find this one exciting is a media problem, not a constitutional one.
Now, the filing says the President determined the three outlets were in "violation of the standards of professionalism and decorum" expected at the White House. Determined. That is the executive branch doing executive branch work. He determined it on the afternoon of Friday the 18th, in a post, announcing the ban "effective immediately" — and the reason he gave there was that the outlets were banned "as a result of their constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS!" — and I want to be precise, because FAKE NEWS is not a classification level. It's a quality complaint. Those are two different arguments and only one of them is in front of the judge. Did I say that? That doesn't sound like me. The standard existed. It simply got written down later, by lawyers, in the version that counts.
By Saturday the three outlets were reporting that their journalists had been denied access to the premises, and the president of the White House Correspondents' Association, Jacqui Heinrich, called for that access to be restored immediately. Professionals disagreeing about professionalism. Governor Wes Moore said on Sunday television that the President uses the Constitution as a "suggestion box," which is a Sunday line, not a legal argument, and I'd thank you to note the judge did not ask for one.
Then Tuesday. Kaitlan Collins, from a banned network, is at the United Nations, asks about the war, and the President tells her, "You should not be here covering me," and goes on about media sleazebags. Is that decorum? It is the enforcement of decorum, which is a different — no. Stop. The filing's claim is that those reporters lack decorum. The demonstration of that claim, on camera, was the word sleazebags, and the offense in the sentence was covering him. I won't pretend those two things sit comfortably in the same week.
But the ban is not about what he calls reporters. It is about what they print, which the announcement described as FAKE NEWS, which is where we came in.
And he said other outlets could be added. That isn't a threat. That's notice. Everyone still holding a pass has been told, in advance, in writing, exactly what the standard is.

OBITUARY
Gavin Newsom's certainty that California's AI industry needed less paperwork, dead at eleven months, of an executive order.
The certainty was born in October 2025, when the governor vetoed a bill that would have required data centers to report their past and anticipated water use when applying for, or renewing, a business license. Newsom warned that the disclosure would strangle innovation and cost California its footing in an industry he wanted the state to lead. The bill died on his desk, and with it any public record of what those numbers might have shown.
The certainty is survived, awkwardly, by itself. On Friday, the same governor signed an executive order to "dramatically accelerate" the convening of a group he calls "world-leading experts," charged with producing a guide so California can "reinforce and strengthen" its AI safety and security laws. The order does not say what changed in eleven months. It says only that something did, and that fixing it now requires a panel rather than a form the industry was already asked, once, to fill out.
This is the shit an industry gets twice: deference when the rules are loosened, deference again when they're rewritten, and no bill presented for either. The innovation that could not survive a water-use disclosure in the fall of 2025 is, in the fall of 2026, apparently sturdy enough to survive a panel of experts writing new rules about it — provided the experts are the ones doing the writing, and not the legislature.
He is preceded in death by the water-use numbers themselves, which were never collected, because the veto made sure no one had to ask.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that the "world-leading experts" be named in public, and their guide published in full, so the next veto can be checked against this one.

COST OF WAR
By MortThe Records Bureau · the milkman edition, 24 September 2026
The impeachment of the Secretary of Defense died this week in the House of Representatives, at the age of nine days, of neglect. It was born on September 15th, when Representative Thomas Massie filed eight articles against Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing an illegal war against Iran and a campaign of strikes on boats that legal scholars call killings. It never had much of a childhood. The next day the Speaker of the House pronounced it dead before it drew breath, calling it a "publicity stunt" — the epitaph arriving ahead of the funeral, which is its own kind of honesty.
By September 17th the House had packed its bags. Members raced for the exits a day early, canceling the floor vote and mailing the whole matter to something called the lame duck session, a waiting room Congress built for the things it would rather not be seen killing in daylight. The Hill reported this week that House leaders are content to let the effort simply lapse there, unvoted, unresolved, the dilemma quietly becoming someone else's problem after November.
The House did not lose this vote. It declined to hold it, which is a smaller and plainer fact, and it explains most of what is wrong with the calendar it built: a great deal of important shit goes into the lame duck and does not come back out. Call the rest of it malarkey, and mean it.
It is survived by the war that occasioned it. A United Nations inquiry found the strikes likely war crimes; the bill has passed $40 billion. On the 18th, the President mused publicly about whether to "annihilate" Iran. This week, at the United Nations, Iran's president called the attacks "cowardly," and the President repeated the threat to annihilate Tehran while, on the sidelines, his own Secretary of State restarted nuclear talks that have so far produced nothing anyone will call a breakthrough. The war outlived the inquiry into the war. It has now outlived the effort to hold anyone accountable for it, too.
It is preceded in death by the idea that a floor vote is owed to a war of this size, and by the shorter-lived notion that a Speaker's word and a calendar are different things.
In lieu of flowers, the House is asked to schedule the vote it already owns.
