ICE director denies agency terrorizes children, says of deportees: 'get them out quick.'

Let's start with what actually happened, because the wire report gets you halfway there and stops. A sitting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement was asked, on record, about a claim that his agency terrorizes children. He did not send a deputy. He did not release a statement through the press office and vanish for a news cycle. He answered the question himself, by name, on camera. In this town, that is called accountability, and I would like credit given where it's due.

Now, the other half. Asked about the removal of a public figure, the director said the agency would 'get them out quick.' I've seen colleagues wince at that phrase like it's a smoking gun. It isn't. It's a scheduling preference. Every process everyone always complains is too slow, and then the one time an official promises speed, suddenly speed's the scandal? You can't have it both — actually, hold on. If the process is supposed to include hearings, review, an appeal window, then 'quick' isn't a preference, it's the thing those steps exist to prevent. Huh. I need a second with that one.…

…(cont) Okay. Moving past that. The point stands that these are two separate news items being stitched together by people who want a headline, not a story. One is a denial of a claim about children. The other is a quote about a public deportation of an adult. Different subjects, different contexts, and if you read them side by side looking for a pattern you will, because that's what side-by-side does to a reader. That's not evidence of anything except that headline writers know what they're doing.

Although — the agency does control both statements. Same director, same podium, same week. So it's not really two separate anything, it's one guy, one microphone, two answers that don't sit well together once you say them out loud. I don't love saying that. I stand by the transparency point. I do not stand by the rest of what I just said, not all of it anyway. The director answered the question. That part's true. Print that part.

'Get them out quick' isn't a policy, it's a stopwatch, and a stopwatch doesn't check anybody's age. Homan gets to look tough on cable either way — deny it on Tuesday, brag about the speed on Wednesday.”
