Cruz Calls Iran Messaging 'Accomplished,' Citing 'Multiple Missions,' As Trump Announces Deal With Top Oil Producer

Senator Ted Cruz went on the record this week defending the administration's Iran messaging as 'accomplished,' citing multiple missions as the evidence, and it is worth taking him at his word, because that is exactly what the record shows: multiple missions, cited as messaging, called accomplished. That is not a criticism. That is the sentence, read twice.
Consider what 'accomplished' usually means in a defense briefing: an objective set, an objective met, a measurable before and after. Cruz's defense instead points to volume — multiple missions — as if the count itself were the outcome. And to be fair, that's a legitimate metric if the goal was to run multiple missions, which, to be fair, it apparently was, since that's what got run, and that's what got cited, and that's — did I just argue that doing a lot of something is the same as it working? …(cont) The same week, the administration announced a deal with a country sitting on the largest oil reserves in the world. That is a genuinely large fact, and it deserves to be treated as one, on its own terms, without borrowing credibility from the Iran messaging next to it or lending credibility to it. A deal with an oil producer is a deal with an oil producer. It is not a verdict on whether missions run elsewhere amounted to a policy outcome. Two different files, and the administration would very much like you to read them as one continuous highlight reel — did I say 'the administration would like'? That's a motive, I can't know that, strike that, I only know what got said and when.
What got said: 'accomplished.' What got cited: a mission count. What got announced separately: a deal with a producer holding the largest reserves on the planet. Whether the first claim and the third fact belong in the same paragraph is a genuinely open question, and the honest answer is that Senator Cruz put them in the same news cycle himself, defending one style of accomplishment while a different, unrelated accomplishment was rolling out down the hall. That's not spin working. That's spin visible, mid-sentence, which is the only kind worth writing down.
“When the accomplishment is the messaging and not the outcome, that's not a policy win, that's a press release with better lighting. Pair it with an oil deal announced on schedule and you start to see the shape of it: talk big, cut a deal with whoever's got the reserves, call both a win before anyone checks the receipts.”
