Here's how you flood the zone: you joke about renaming a Canadian lake after yourself, and by Tuesday it's already true. Not policy-true, not treaty-true — Google Maps true, which is the only kind of true anybody under forty checks anymore. Lake Ontario, four hundred years on the map as itself, gets renamed 'Lake America' for U.S. phones because a man in Washington said it into a microphone and nobody in Mountain View wanted the phone call that comes after they don't listen.
Meanwhile, actual water is being fought over. There's an oil deal with Venezuela working its way through the same news cycle — real barrels, real revenue, real diplomacy — and it rides underneath the lake joke in the same wire item, like a rider on a bill nobody reads past the headline. That's not an accident, that's the format. You put the fake outrage on top because the real transaction underneath doesn't want you looking at it too long.…

He's not wrong, except SNL has a laugh track and this doesn't — this has an actual American company's actual cartography department actually complying with actual instructions actually shipped to actual phones. The joke wrote a memo. Somebody typed it up. Somebody signed off. That's not comedy, that's an org chart.
And here's the part that should bother you at your kitchen table: the same week a friendly neighbor gets its lake renamed for a bit, an oil arrangement with a government we've spent twenty years calling illegitimate gets debated in the same breath. Nobody's renaming that. Nobody's putting that on a map. That stays boring on purpose, because boring doesn't trend, and trend is the whole business model now — outrage as traffic, traffic as cover.
So enjoy 'Lake America.' It's not a border dispute, it's a distraction with really good production values, and the actual money keeps moving under it exactly like it always does — quietly, past the joke, into somebody's column. Canada gets to be a punchline this week. Somebody else gets to be a line item. Guess which one shows up in next quarter's earnings call.
