Homan says 'get them out quick' on Milo's deportation, then denies ICE terrorizes children.
As it ran on the front
Border enforcement runs on discipline, and this week acting ICE director Tom Homan offered the public a rare window into how that discipline works. Asked about the removal of commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, Homan's directive to the field was plain: get them out quick. That is not cruelty, that is throughput. A federal agency that moves cases without delay is a federal agency doing its job, and taxpayers should be relieved, not alarmed, that the paperwork does not sit on a desk for six months.
Separately, a Democratic senator suggested that ICE terrorizes children in the course of these operations. Homan took the claim head on, and he was right to. The agency does not terrorize children. It removes individuals pursuant to lawful orders, on a schedule — the same schedule Homan just finished bragging about for Yiannopoulos — did I say bragging, I meant describing, the same efficient, quick, get-them-out-the-door schedule that apparently does not pause to ask how old anyone in the vehicle is. That's not what I — that phrasing got away from me.…
…(cont) Look, the point stands: nobody at ICE sits down in the morning with a goal of frightening a child. The goal is throughput. If throughput happens to run through a household with a child in it, that is a scheduling matter, not a policy of terror, and there is a real difference between the two, even if from inside the vehicle it is hard to tell which one you are in.
Homan's defenders will note that 'get them out quick' was said about one adult, one case, one commentator with a public profile who does not require anyone's sympathy. Fair. But an agency does not run two different clocks — a fast one for cases that make headlines and a slow, gentle one for the ones that don't. It runs one clock, and this week the man in charge of the clock told us, on the record, how fast he likes it set. That's the whole statement. Everything else is context nobody at the agency asked for.
“Get them out quick works great until quick is the whole policy, and then the kid in the back seat isn't a rumor anymore. Homan denying it doesn't change the schedule he just bragged about days earlier.”
“Homan's just describing throughput, not cruelty — an efficient agency clearing cases on schedule, that's just good government. That's not a talking point, that's — okay, it does sound worse said out loud than it did in the briefing room.”
