Let's be clear about what's at stake here. When the Republican National Committee's chair says a Democratic majority in the House means antisemites get handed the gavel, that's not fearmongering — that's forecasting. Direct threat to the Jewish community, said the chair, and you don't say a thing like that unless you've seen the internal polling, or the group chats, or — well, unless you needed a fundraising email out by five.
Now, some of you will point to Congressman Clyburn, who came out this week and said impeachment shouldn't even be the priority if Democrats retake the House. Committee assignments, maybe an infrastructure bill, some oversight hearings — that's the platform he described. Fine. Sure. That's — hang on. That's not the platform of a party planning to hand out antisemitism like a floor privilege. That's the platform of a whip counting votes on a farm bill.…
…(cont) I want to be fair to both sides of this. The RNC chair is warning you about a coming wave of extremism sweeping into power on Election Night. Congressman Clyburn is telling you, on the record, that the top item on that same wave's agenda is declining to impeach a sitting president. I don't see how both of those are true at the same time, actually. Let me start over.
Here's the case for alarm: a Democratic majority is dangerous. Here's the evidence marshaled for that case: the senior-most Democrat willing to go on camera and outline the agenda picked skipping the one confrontational item everybody expected. That's the whole exhibit. That's what we've got.
Look, warnings work because people don't check the follow-up quote. That's not a strategy, that's just — that's the strategy. The chair needed a threat big enough to justify off-cycle donations, and Clyburn needed to sound like a grown-up managing a caucus, and both of those things are true independently, and neither one needs the other one to be false, except that they were describing the same nine months.
The direct threat to the Jewish community, as outlined in committee, turns out to be a committee. That's it. That's the release.
“You warn people about the wolves at the door, then the guy at the door says he's there to do paperwork. That's not a coincidence, that's the business model — scare first, then let the actual agenda be boring enough nobody checks the receipts. The Jewish community isn't the audience here, the donor list is.”
“The chair's warning stands on its own merits — a Democratic majority changes committee chairs, changes subpoena power, changes everything. Congressman Clyburn's comments were about sequencing, not — okay, they were about not doing it at all. That's a different thing than what we said. Let's move on.”
