Border czar Tom Homan's instruction regarding the deportation of Milo Yiannopoulos — 'get them out quick' — is, this column would like to establish at the outset, simply an articulation of operational efficiency. An agency executing a legal removal order should, in fact, execute it quickly. This is not a controversial position. Efficient enforcement is efficient enforcement, whether this column happens to enjoy the specific outcome or not, and this column would defend it in either direction, on principle, always.
Separately, when a Democratic senator characterized Immigration and Customs Enforcement's tactics as 'terrorizing' children, Homan took the claim on directly and rejected it, which this column also considers the correct posture: an agency should not sit quietly while a sitting senator uses a word that strong, on the record, without pushback.…
…(cont) Now, this column would like to address the fact that these are, in fact, the same posture problem stated twice. An agency that instructs its officers to move as fast as possible on a removal, and separately insists that its methods around children are gentle and unhurried, is describing two different operational tempos and asking the public not to notice the seam between them. That is — this column did not intend to put it that way. Strike the previous sentence.
What this column meant to say is that speed and care are not mutually exclusive operational values, and an agency can hold both simultaneously without contradiction, the same way a surgeon can move quickly and carefully at once. This column stands by the surgeon comparison. This column will not be taking further questions about the surgeon comparison.
The senator's claim about terrorizing children remains, in this column's assessment, an allegation, not a finding — a word choice, not a docket entry — and Homan's denial is exactly as much evidence as the senator's original claim, which is to say, this column would remind the reader, not very much evidence in either direction. Both statements are on the record, filed a day apart, about the same agency. Only one of them describes what actually happens to a family at five in the morning, and this column notes that neither man was asked to.
“He brags about speed getting people out the door, then gets indignant when someone names what that speed looks like for a kid at five in the morning. You don't get to claim the tempo and deny the temperature.”
“'Get them out quick' is about docket efficiency, not disregard for anyone involved — and the senator's 'terrorizes children' line is rhetoric, not a finding. Homan's denial and her claim carry equal evidentiary weight, which is, fine, not actually a defense of anything.”
