Trump declares 'I don't want Canadian anything,' Google renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America.'

As it ran on the front

Call it what it is. The president said, in his own words, that he does not want 'Canadian anything' — not the softwood, not the dairy, not the hockey players, apparently not the lake either, because within days of the executive order, Google Maps quietly swapped 'Lake Ontario' for 'Lake America' for anyone looking at it from this side of the border. Nobody voted on this. Nobody asked the people of Buffalo or Rochester if they'd like their Great Lake renamed after a mood. A man got mad at Canada in public, and a piece of the actual physical planet changed its label to match his mood by the following Tuesday.

This is not a border dispute. It is not a treaty renegotiation. It is a president saying a sentence out loud — 'I don't want Canadian anything' — and a trillion-dollar company complying with the sentence as if it were policy, because at some altitude, for some companies, a sentence from that office is policy, executive order or not. Lake Ontario has been called Lake Ontario since before there was a United States to rename it. It sits on an international boundary. Half of it belongs to a country the president just spent a news cycle calling the worst leadership of any nation on earth. That half didn't get a vote either.…

…(cont) Here's the part that should bother you even if you don't care about lakes. If a map company will rename a body of water shared with a sovereign nation because the boss said a mean thing about that nation, that is not a company with an independent spine, that is a company with a customer it cannot afford to lose. Today it's a lake. The lake isn't the point. The point is what else gets renamed, reclassified, or quietly disappeared the next time someone in that office says a sentence out loud and everyone downstream decides it's easier to just comply than to check whether he meant it. Lake America is a joke until you notice nobody's laughing at the company that did it.

“You say one sentence about not wanting anything Canadian and a map app renames one of the Great Lakes inside a week — that's not a coincidence, that's a company that knows exactly who signs the executive order that keeps them out of antitrust hearings. Half that lake still belongs to Canada; nobody asked their half either.”

“The renaming reflects updated geographic data following an executive directive, nothing more — this has nothing to do with the trade dispute, the trade dispute is a completely separate — well, they were announced the same week, but correlation isn't administration policy.”
