US strikes Iran again, citing preparations to mine a strait, then sanctions a bank.
Let's be clear about what happened, because the wires are making this sound complicated when it is not. On Saturday, US forces struck two Iranian rocket launch sites. This was the first such strike since late July, which this desk is authorized to say means the previous restraint policy worked exactly as designed — restraint, that is, until it didn't, which is Tuesday, and now it's happened again. The Daily Caller reported the strikes came after US intelligence observed preparations to mine the Strait of Hormuz. That is the entire justification and it is sufficient. Nobody mined anything. That's the point — we struck before they finished, which is either prevention or the opposite of what 'first strike' is supposed to mean, and if that sounds like a contradiction, it's because — no, it's prevention. Preparations were observed. Observing counts. Separately, and this is unrelated, the Treasury Department is preparing to sanction another bank as part of ongoing efforts to restrict Iranian financial transactions. This is routine enforcement. It has nothing to do with the strikes, except that it happened the same week, for the same country, as part of the same policy, which — fine, it is related, they are the same campaign, run by the same building. Meanwhile Iran struck US military bases in Jordan following the Larak Island strikes, which this desk would like to note is Iran's fault for retaliating against a strike that, again, was preventive, against preparations, that had not resulted in anything yet. If you are asking how many times 'first attack since' can appear before it is simply 'attack,' that is not a question this desk is equipped to answer today, or possibly ever. What this desk can confirm: the launch sites were struck, the bank will be sanctioned, the bases in Jordan were hit, and every one of those four sentences is true independently and also somehow describes the same month. That is not escalation. That is a policy with a lot of moving parts, several of which are munitions.
