Here's the sequence, in order, because the order is the whole story. Two months out from Election Day, a polling aggregate has Republicans trailing in eight battleground Senate races. Not close in some of them — trailing, plural, eight. Days later, word comes down that the party is throwing together what its own people are calling a 'very hasty' convention in Texas, a Trump-a-palooza, scheduled like a man remembering his own anniversary the morning of. And somewhere in Michigan, a GOP candidate for governor stands up and says the state's elections are 'ground zero for this republic.'
You do not get to skip step one. The panic did not start with a threat to democracy. It started with a spreadsheet. Eight races, trailing, and only after that number gets published does the rhetoric turn to civilizational stakes. That is not a coincidence, that is a release schedule.…
…(cont) I have watched this move for forty years and it never changes shape. When the polling is good, elections are elections — count the votes, seat the winner, go home. When the polling is bad, suddenly the election is not an election anymore, it is 'ground zero,' it is existential, it is the hill everybody has to die on, and somehow the same machine that trusted the count in the years it won stops trusting the count the year it might not. The 'very hasty' part is the tell. You do not throw a hasty party when you are winning. You throw a hasty party when the invitations need to go out before anyone reads the crosstabs.
None of this requires a conspiracy. It requires a calendar. Eight races down, a rally rushed onto the schedule, and a candidate in Michigan pre-loading the excuse before a single vote gets counted. The doubt is not a reaction to fraud. The doubt is a product, and like any product, it gets manufactured on a deadline, and the deadline this year is two months away, and it has your name on the ballot whether you asked for it or not.
