Trump orders maps changed to show 'Lake America' as trade war with Canada escalates.
As it ran on the front
Somewhere there's a cartographer at Google being told to change a body of water to 'Lake America' on direct order, and somewhere else there's a trade war with Canada getting worse by the week, and I want you to notice these two things are happening to the same country at the same time, run by the same guy, and ask yourself which one he thinks is the achievement.
Here's the thing about renaming a body of water after your country: it costs nothing, changes nothing about the water, and gets you a headline that sounds like an achievement to anybody who doesn't look too close. That's the move. That's always the move. You put a flag on something that was already yours and call it a win, while over on the actual scoreboard — trade with a neighboring country we've done business with for over a century — you're calling their leadership the worst of any country on earth, out loud, on the record, while the tariffs do what tariffs do, which is show up on a receipt at a hardware store in Michigan.…
…(cont) I've been saying this at the end of the bar for years and getting told I'm reading too much into it: watch what gets renamed and watch what gets more expensive, because they rarely happen the same week by accident. This week they did. 'Lake America' is free. The trade war is not free. Somebody in Buffalo or Detroit is going to pay actual American dollars for lumber, aluminum, and produce that used to come across a friendly border, and the map is going to say 'Lake America' on every phone in the country while it happens.
That's the whole trick in one week: the symbolic win is instant and costs nothing, the real cost lands on a grocery bill six weeks from now and gets blamed on inflation instead of the guy who picked the fight. The map changed overnight. The prices don't change back that fast, and nobody's renaming the receipt.
So when the leaders of a friendly country get called the worst on earth by a man who also just renamed a lake after himself, ask which of those two facts is going to still matter to your grocery bill in October. It isn't the lake.
“The man renames a lake for himself the same week he's calling the leaders of our biggest trading partner the worst on earth — that's not strategy, that's redecorating the house while the pipes burst, and the water bill shows up on your receipt, not his.”
“Standing firm with Canada on trade isn't an insult, it's leverage, and if their leadership wants better treatment they can stop — I don't actually have the specific ask in front of me, but the leverage is real, I promise you the leverage is real.”
The receipts
Google announced that it had begun rolling out changes to how its maps display Lake Ontario's name, after President Trump signed an executive order changing it to "Lake America."
