GOP trails in 8 battleground Senate races two months out; readies 'hasty' Trump-a-palooza convention.

Here's the arithmetic nobody at the podium wants to say out loud: eight battleground Senate races, and the polling aggregate has the incumbent party trailing in all eight, two months before Election Day. That's not a bad news cycle. That's a structural problem showing up in a spreadsheet, in state after state, with enough consistency that it stops being noise and starts being a trend line. The response to a trend line like that is usually a strategy memo. The response this time is a convention. In Texas. Described, by the party's own people, as 'very hasty,' and branded, not by critics, not by this columnist, but by the party itself, as 'Trump-a-palooza.'
Sit with that name for a second. Not 'The Path Forward.' Not 'Middle America Rising.' Trump-a-palooza. That's not a message discipline choice, that's a tell — a party down eight races decided the fix was more of the exact ingredient that's been on the label the whole time it started losing altitude. You don't rebrand around the guy dragging the ticket unless you've already concluded the base is the only electorate left worth talking to, because the swing voters in those eight states have made up their minds, and the polling says which way.…
…(cont) This is the oldest move at the bar: when the numbers turn on you, you don't fix the numbers, you throw a party and hope the noise drowns out the spreadsheet. Somebody is paying for that convention — the hotel blocks, the staging, the security detail for a sitting president doing a lap through a midterm cycle his own party is losing — and it will not be described, anywhere in the filing, as a campaign expenditure against eight specific losing races, even though that is precisely what it is.
The stakes: control of the Senate, decided in eight states, while the party trailing in all eight spends the runway on a pep rally with its own name in lights. Whoever wins those eight seats writes the next two years of what gets funded and what doesn't. That part isn't hasty at all.
