Let this be stated with the plainest possible clarity: what Google Maps did this week to Lake Ontario is not diplomacy, it is cartography. The company updated its United States labeling to read 'Lake America' after a presidential directive, and this office has been asked to explain why a body of water shared with a sovereign neighbor now carries a name that neighbor did not choose. The answer is simple. Maps get updated. That is what maps do. They update. Nobody should read into an update.
Now, the timing. The rename lands the same week the President said, in so many words, that he does not want 'Canadian anything.' That is a separate statement, about a separate subject, made by a separate — no, the same person, obviously, made by the President, about trade, not water. Lakes are not trade. What matters — and let us return to what matters — is that Americans opening a map application now see a lake called 'Lake America,' bordered on one side by a country the President says he wants nothing to do with, and on the other side by more Lake America. That is not a border dispute. That is a labeling convention. It is embarrassing only if you already believe the government cannot rename a shared natural resource on a whim, and this office cannot speak to what you already believe.
To summarize the official position: this is not a message to Canada. It was never a message to Canada. It is a map. It is, this office will concede, a map with a message in it. That concession is off the record. Put it back on the record. The rename stands. The trade war continues. The lake, regardless of what the app now calls it, remains exactly where it was, unmoved by any of this.
