Let's be clear about what Tom Homan actually said, because the quote is not complicated: get them out quick. That's it. That's the plan. The former ICE director, now the Administration's border czar, was asked about the removal of Milo Yiannopoulos and gave the kind of answer press secretaries dream about — short, declarative, no hedging. Get them out quick. You want efficiency in government? That's efficiency in government.
And when a Democratic senator stood up and said, on the record, that ICE terrorizes children, Homan didn't duck it. He took it head-on, which — and I want to be fair here — is more than most agencies do when a senator lobs a word like 'terrorizes' at them. Most press shops issue a statement through counsel. Homan just answered the question. That's the definition of transparency, or it would be, if —…
…(cont) Actually, hold on. Let me back up. 'Get them out quick' and 'we do not terrorize children' are not, when you set them next to each other, exactly reinforcing. I said that wrong. What I mean is, they're two different — they're consistent, is what I'm — they're consistent applications of the same underlying — okay, they're the same policy described twice, and I don't love how that reads out loud, but the policy is the policy.
Here's the actual defense, and it's a real one: speed is not the same as harm. An agency can process removals quickly and still claim it does so within its own guidelines. Homan is entitled to say both things in the same week. Nobody is required to slow down deportations just because the pace makes people uncomfortable. That's not evidence of anything. That's just —
No, wait. That is what the senator is describing. The speed IS the complaint. I said 'that's not evidence of anything' and then immediately described the exact mechanism the senator is talking about. Strike that whole paragraph. Actually don't strike it, print it, my editor will fix it.
Look. The Administration believes fast removals are good government. It has said so, repeatedly, on the record, in Homan's own words. Whether 'quick' and 'not terrorizing kids' can both be true at the same time is not really a question I'm equipped to answer today. Next question.
