Record dark money floods the 2026 midterms as more legitimate mail ballots arrive late and get tossed.
As it ran on the front
Here's the con, and it's not even hidden anymore, it's just filed under two different sections of the same newspaper. Section one: 2026 is on track to be the least transparent midterm on record, because the money moving into these races is dark, meaning nobody has to put a name on the check. Section two: mail ballots, the ones that do have a name on them, your name, are arriving late this year in bigger numbers, and a bigger share of those are getting thrown out.
Notice the shape of that. Money that hides who sent it: welcome, no deadline problem, flows right in. A vote that identifies exactly who cast it: subject to a postmark, a clock, a mailroom, and if any link in that chain runs a day slow, it doesn't count. …(cont) Nobody had to conspire to build this. That's the part that should bother you more, not less. You don't need a smoke-filled room when the rules already sort it for you — loosen disclosure on one end, leave a deadline as tight as it already was on the other, and the money finds its way in while the votes find their way to a rejection pile. It's not a glitch. A glitch gets fixed. This has run the same direction for a few cycles now.
Ask who benefits from a system where the money is anonymous and the vote is disqualifiable. It's not the person who mailed a ballot nine days before the election and watched it get tossed because a sorting facility somewhere ran slow. It's whoever's name isn't on that dark-money filing, competing in an election where the loudest voices are untraceable and the quietest one — an actual citizen's mail ballot — is the one getting thrown in the discard pile for being a day late.
That's the wallet-level version of a midterm election: your ballot has to be perfect and on time. Their check doesn't even need your name on it.

State officials say they worry about the Postal Service’s ability to deliver votes this fall. They are urging voters to mail their ballots early or use drop boxes so their votes count.
