Read the order the wires filed it in, because the order is the whole point. Russia hit Kyiv for a fifth straight day. Then, same week, Putin sat down with Modi and Xi Jinping to unveil what's being called an anti-US global influence summit. The bombing came first. The summit came after. Nobody had to schedule those two events next to each other for the sequence to read like a receipt.
This is the part that gets lost when each story runs on its own wire feed, filed by its own desk: a fifth straight day of strikes on a capital is not a backdrop to a diplomatic summit, it is the opening act. You do not get invited to host an anti-US unity gathering by sitting quietly. You get invited by demonstrating, in public, on a five-day streak, that you are still capable of doing the thing the summit is organized to protect you from being isolated over.…

They showed up anyway, cameras rolling, handshakes documented. That is not a contradiction anybody in that room considers awkward. That is the arrangement working exactly as designed: the strikes buy leverage, the summit banks it.
The people who tell you this is two unrelated foreign-desk items — a war story here, a diplomacy story there — are asking you to unbundle a sequence that the participants themselves did not bother to unbundle. Putin did not pause the campaign to attend the summit. He attended the summit because the campaign was still running.
None of this requires reading minds. It requires reading two headlines in the order they happened, on the same continent-spanning week, and noticing that the man doing the bombing did not lose a single seat at the table for it. That's the arithmetic of power when nobody's checking the receipts. We just did.
