Retired Israeli generals warn of ethnic cleansing in West Bank; masked settlers attack journalists and family days later.

"Ethnic cleansing" is one of those phrases nobody in a suit says lightly, and yet here's a batch of retired Israeli generals — men who used to run actual armies — putting it in print about their own settlers in the West Bank. Not activists. Not the UN. Generals. The people whose whole career was reading maps and deciding who lives where. When guys like that start using the phrase, that's not rhetoric, that's an after-action report.
Then, days later, receipts arrive on schedule: masked settlers jump an NBC News crew and a Palestinian family, also in the West Bank. Not a village nobody's heard of. Not a rumor. A named news organization's own crew, on camera, getting worked over by men who covered their faces first. …(cont) Here's the part that should keep you up: masks mean premeditation. Nobody masks up for a spontaneous property dispute. You mask up because you've done this before, or you've been told this is how it's done, or both. And it happens in the same window the generals are on record describing as a pattern, not an incident.
This is the trick language does for power: "settler activity" sounds like farming. "Friction" sounds like static electricity. What actually happened is armed men in masks went after a film crew and a family, and the guys who used to command Israel's military called the broader pattern ethnic cleansing before it even happened this particular Tuesday. That's not commentary catching up to events. That's a warning label the label-makers ignored.
The stakes here aren't abstract. West Bank land doesn't move without money and weapons moving with it, both of which have addresses back in Washington. Every time this gets filed under "conflict," the actual verb — attack, on a named crew, days after a formal warning — gets laundered into ambiance. It isn't ambiance. It's a pattern described in advance by the people most qualified to describe it, followed by the exact thing they described. Write that down. Then ask why the check still clears.
