Vice President Vance confirmed this week that the administration sent Iran a message via an AI-generated video depicting a strike on Kharg Island. This office would describe that as deterrence signaling: a demonstration, not an attack, communicated through a medium — synthetic video — chosen specifically because it costs nothing and hits no one.
Shortly afterward, the war flared up on two fronts, and Trump issued a fresh threat. This office would like to note that correlation is not causation, that regional conflicts have many inputs, and that it would be irresponsible to draw a straight line from 'we sent them a fake video of their own oil terminal exploding' to 'the war got worse on two fronts at once.' Although, laid out in that order, on that timeline, I'm having trouble identifying what the alternative explanation would be.…
…(cont) The strategic logic here, as this office understands it, is that adversaries respond to strength, and a video — even a generated one, even one depicting infrastructure that has not actually been struck — communicates capability and will. That's the theory. Whether the theory survives contact with an actual second front is, per today's reporting, an open question, and by open question I mean it appears to have already been answered, and not in the theory's favor.
To be fair to the administration, 'sending a message' is a time-honored diplomatic tool, and no one at this podium is suggesting the video itself caused new fighting to break out — wars have their own momentum, their own causes, their own — actually, 'fresh threat' is the administration's own phrase, from the same story, about the same moment, so I may be defending a sequence of events the administration is simultaneously taking credit for. I'll circle back once I've had a chance to align this with today's talking points, which I have just realized I was reading from the wrong page.
