Shutdown bill hits House floor as White House touts Reflecting Pool 'almost completely fixed.'

Let's be clear about what the American people are watching this week, because the coverage has gotten sloppy. The House returns to session with a shutdown bill on the table — a routine budget mechanism, nothing more, the kind of housekeeping Washington does every few years, and if it lapses, well, essential services continue, mostly, functionally — that's not a crisis, that's a Tuesday.
Meanwhile the White House announced the Reflecting Pool is almost completely fixed, and I want to push back on anyone reading that as some kind of distraction. This is infrastructure. This is a two-hundred-foot body of water that reflects the Washington Monument, and it had algae, and now it doesn't, largely, mostly. You want to tell me that's not a legitimate achievement worth a press mention the same week Congress can't fund the government? Fine — maybe the timing is unfortunate. Maybe someone on comms should have — no, you know what, I'll say it: it looks bad. It looks like the pool got fixed faster than the government gets funded, and I don't have a clean answer for why the reflecting infrastructure runs ahead of the actual infrastructure.…

It's optics, and optics matter, and I refuse to apologize for an administration that understands optics — even if, sure, occasionally the optics are the entire policy, and there isn't a second thing behind them, which, again, is not what I meant to say out loud.
Look, nobody is saying the shutdown bill and the pool announcement were coordinated to happen the same week. Nobody is saying that. I'm saying it would be a strange coincidence if they were, and coincidences happen, and if the Reflecting Pool is 'almost completely fixed' the same week federal paychecks are almost completely funded, that's just how budgets work, they're never fully anything, they're always almost, that's the nature of — that's not reassuring, is it. No. It isn't. I'll have a statement for you tomorrow.
