Let's be clear about what happened here, because the coverage has gotten this backwards: the President posted an AI-generated image of the Kharg Island strike, and Vice President Vance explained — correctly — that the image was sending a message to the Iranians. That is called deterrence. That is called strategic communication, and it has a long and honorable histo— actually, it has a fairly short history, because until this week nobody had used a synthetic image of a bombing run as a messaging tool, so let's call it what the record shows: new.
The war itself, the actual one, is flaring on two fronts, per the wire, with a fresh threat from the President layered on top. That part is not synthetic. That part involves real aircraft, real coordinates, and a real body count that the AI picture does not touch, run, or represent in any technical sense. Vance's defense was that the image sends a message. It does. The message is that the administration now generates its war photography rather than takes it, which is either a cost-saving measure or something else, and this desk is not in a position to say it's the something else, so we won't.…
…(cont) Was the image real? No. Did Vance say it was sending a message? Yes, on camera, to this network. Do those two facts sit comfortably next to each other? That's above this column's pay gr— no. It's exactly this column's job, and the answer is they don't, particularly, but the administration is not required to make them comfortable, only accurate, and accuracy was not the claim. The message was the claim.
What we can confirm: a war is flaring on two fronts. What we can also confirm: the administration chose that week to post a fake picture of it and defend the picture rather than brief on the fronts. Both of those sentences are true at once, which this desk understands is an awkward place to stand, and stands there anyway, because that is the job today.
