'Lake America' — look, that's not official policy, that's Secretary Burgum floating something after a call, it's a naming conversation, agencies have naming conversations all the time, this is not the administration renaming a body of water because — well, because the President asked, I mean, technically that is what happened, but 'asked' is doing a lot of — okay, he asked, Burgum's confirming it's coming 'soon,' that part's just accurate, I shouldn't have tried to make that sound smaller than it is.
And the autism comment, the Amish comment — the President is raising a question a lot of parents have, about vaccine schedules, about outcomes in communities that opt out, that's a legitimate area of — actually, no, fact-checkers looked at this specific claim, the zero-cases claim, and it doesn't hold, there isn't data supporting 'zero,' so that's not a legitimate open question, that's just a false number he said out loud in public, which — I was told not to say that part.…
…(cont) Look, the throughline here, if there is one, is that this White House treats a phone call the same way it treats a health statistic: as a starting point you can just announce and let the agencies catch up to. Burgum's out there saying 'soon' about a map before there's a process. The President's out there saying 'zero' about autism before there's a study. That's — actually, when you put it that way, that's the same failure twice in one week, and I did not mean to lay it out that clearly, that was supposed to be two separate, unrelated news items I was defending, and now they're just... the same problem. I'm going to stop talking.
For the record: no process document exists for the lake renaming, and no data exists for the autism figure. Both are just something the President said that a subordinate then had to go stand behind. That's not a scandal, that's a Tuesday around here, and I should not have said that either, but at this point the transcript speaks for itself, and so, apparently, does the map.
