Trump calls the Iran conflict 'a relatively little war for us' as protesters target a warmongers conference.
As it ran on the front
'A relatively little war for us.' Read that again slow. Not 'a war that ended quickly.' Not 'a limited engagement.' 'Little war for us' — the 'for us' is the whole sentence, because somewhere there's a version of this war that isn't little, and he's telling you which side of that line he's standing on.
This is after actual strikes were actually exchanged, first ones in weeks, which means the pause wasn't peace, it was reload time. And the word he reached for to describe the resumption wasn't 'concerning' or 'regrettable,' the standard vocabulary for a guy who wants to sound responsible about a war — it was 'relatively little,' which is the vocabulary of a guy sizing up a receipt.…
…(cont) Same week, in Philadelphia, people who don't have the luxury of calling wars little showed up outside a conference built for the industry that sells the little wars — organizers, funders, whoever gets a badge to that kind of event — and made a point of standing outside it instead of ignoring it. That's not a coincidence of scheduling. That's two different reactions to the same set of facts: one side minimizes the scale, the other side shows up at the address where the scale gets decided.
Here's the connection nobody in the briefing room is going to draw for you: wars don't get called 'relatively little' by the people paying for them in blood. They get called that by the people who aren't going to be the ones bleeding, doing the math on what 'for us' costs versus what it buys. The conference those protesters targeted exists because somebody, somewhere, does that math for a living and comes out ahead every time the war stays 'relatively little' instead of ending.
I'm not telling you the war is bigger than he says. I'm telling you 'relatively little' is a category, not a fact, and categories get chosen by whoever's not standing in the blast radius. The protesters outside that conference weren't confused about the difference. That's the whole reason they were there.
“He called it 'a relatively little war for us' — the 'for us' is doing the work there, ask anybody standing closer to the strikes if it feels little. Same week people showed up outside an actual conference of the guys who profit off wars this size to say something about it, and that's the whole ballgame: he minimizes, they organize, the arms contracts don't care which.”
“'Relatively little' is a technical comparison, historically speaking — World War Two was bigger, that's just a fact, the President is providing context. And the conference the protesters targeted is a private industry event, people are allowed to attend industry events, that's not — well, it's a war industry event, I'll give you that much.”
