As it ran on the front
Excuse me — sorry, just, I had this written down somewhere. Here it is. Two speeches. Same week, near as I can tell. First one's public — 'Vance Defends Approach to Antisemitism in Remarks to Jewish Conservatives,' that's a headline, that's on the record, cameras and everything. Second one, and this is the part I keep coming back to, 'closed-door speech.' Same week. Different room. No cameras.
I don't know much, I'm not a policy man, but I do know something about doors. I got one on my garage — you push the button, it goes up, everybody on the block can see what's in there. And I got one on my hall closet, the one I only open when company's coming, so nobody sees the mess I haven't dealt with. Two doors, two purposes. One's for showing. One's for managing.…
…(cont) So I keep asking myself: if the approach is fine — and that's the word they used, 'defends his approach' — if it's fine, publicly, on the record, to a room full of Jewish conservatives, then what's the olive branch for? You don't offer an olive branch over something you already defended as correct. That's just what an olive branch is — I looked it up, actually, it's a peace gesture, comes after a conflict, not before one.
I wrote 'closed-door' three times in this notebook, underlined it twice. I don't know why that word's bothering me so much, but it is.
So here's what I've got, and maybe you can help me out, because I'm stuck on it: he defended the approach in public, to Jewish conservatives, on the record. And separately — same week — he made peace with pro-Israel Republicans, behind a closed door, off the record. My wife says I overthink these things, and maybe I do.
But — oh, wait, one more thing, sorry, before you go — if the public defense and the private olive branch were about the same approach, why'd one of them need a closed door?
“He defends the approach on the record, then patches things up behind a closed door the same week — if the approach didn't need patching, the door wouldn't need to be closed.”
“The Senator's public remarks and his private outreach are entirely consistent — he's building bridges wherever he can, publicly and privately. There's no contradiction between defending your approach and also privately admitting people are upset about — wait, I didn't say admitting anything.”
