Let's be clear about what the President said, because precision matters here, unlike apparently everywhere else this week: he said Iran is DEAD, all capital letters, and this office stands by every letter of that statement.
Now, some in the press are pointing to a piece — sorry, several pieces — saying new turbulence has hit the stability of the situation the President declared over. But turbulence is not the same as failure. Turbulence is a normal part of any dead thing settling into its deadness. Ask any funeral home. Actually, don't ask a funeral home, that's a bad example, let me try again.…
…(cont) What the President meant, and what any serious person understood him to mean, was that Iran's capacity to project the kind of threat it once did has been degraded to the point of functional death, which — experts, again, not me, experts — point to as accurate, they're just measuring the sign differently, on a different timeline, closer to the brink rather than over it. Is that different from DEAD? I want to say no. I believe the position this office wants me to hold is no.
Here's the thing about turbulence, and I say this as someone who reads the briefing before I talk, mostly: new turbulence doesn't undo an old declaration, it just means the declaration was forward-looking. The President has always been forward-looking. He declared DEAD the way a coach calls a game at halftime because he likes the score — wait, that assumes the game continues after halftime, which actually undermines the point I'm — let me just say the administration's position is that Iran is dead, that the region is stable, and that any turbulence you're currently reading about is a separate, unrelated, ongoing situation the President is monitoring closely, the same situation he already called dead.
We stand by the statement. We stand by the turbulence. We are not going to stand by both of those next to each other in the same sentence again, because I just did that, and I heard it.
