Follow along, won't you — all together now, straight from the whistleblower complaint. A federal employee, we'll call him Postal Pete for the purposes of this column because nobody needs his real name dragged through a caper he didn't ask to star in, alleges that the United States Postal Service is quietly moving ahead on a mail voting initiative tied to the White House, timed to land before the midterms.

We are told, politely, by the agency's own conduct, that a service whose stated mission is delivering the mail has taken on a side project involving whether the mail that delivers your ballot arrives at all, or arrives correctly, or arrives in time to be counted, and that this side project is being handled with the kind of quiet that usually accompanies things institutions would rather explain after the fact than before it.
This column does not know Postal Pete's motives. This column does not know whether the plan, as alleged, will work as alleged, or whether 'work' is even the right word for a plan whose measurable outcome, per the whistleblower, points toward fewer ballots counted rather than more. What this column knows is what's on the page: a complaint alleging a specific agency is moving on a specific initiative on a specific timeline, ahead of a specific election.
The Postal Service delivers birthday cards, jury summonses, and, allegedly, in this instance, itself, into a story it would very much prefer to stay out of. We are simply reading the complaint as filed. The rest, dear reader, is between you and your mailbox, which — we should mention — is federal property, and which this whistleblower says is currently the site of a plan nobody elected anyone to run.
