Two stories ran the same week, from friendly camps, and neither one mentions the other, which is exactly how you know they're related. The Washington Examiner spent its column inches insisting the phrase 'Gaza genocide' is a hoax, full stop, nothing to see, move along. Novara Media, reporting from the same news cycle, has Netanyahu on record wanting a full-scale war in the West Bank. Nobody put those two headlines in the same paragraph. This desk just did.
Here's the thing about calling something a hoax before the war it's supposedly hoaxing about has finished happening: it isn't analysis, it's inoculation. You don't need to disprove a claim if you can get the word 'hoax' stapled to it early enough that the disproving never has to happen — the label does the work the facts were supposed to do. And it's not an accident that the label shows up in the same stretch of days that a head of state is on record wanting to expand the war it's attached to. That's not a coincidence of timing. That's cover fire, laid down exactly when the ground operation needs it.…
…(cont) None of this requires anybody to believe in a conspiracy meeting where these two things were coordinated over a conference call. It doesn't need to be coordinated to function like coordination. One institution says the thing didn't happen while another institution's leader is publicly planning for it to happen more. The word 'hoax' doesn't have to be true. It just has to arrive on schedule, and it arrived on schedule.
This is the part where the guy at the end of the bar is supposed to sound unhinged, except the receipts are dated the same week, and both quotes are on the record, and nobody's disputing that they said it. The paranoid read isn't that these are connected. The paranoid read would be believing they aren't — that a full-scale war announcement and a hoax denial just happened to land in the same news cycle, from allied outlets, about the same conflict, and that's just how the algorithm shook out.
It didn't. It never does. And the next headline about the West Bank is going to get read by somebody's kid, scrolling past it on the way to school, already primed by the last one not to quite believe it.
