House censures Rep. Chuck Edwards for inappropriate conduct, then censures him again, then he apologizes halfway
Rep. Chuck Edwards, North Carolina Republican, was censured by the House for inappropriate conduct toward aides. The chamber then repeated the censure, for emphasis or perhaps for posterity. The record now holds two censures; precedent in death by repetition. The apology arrived, but halfway, not quite reaching the end zone. Born of the old school, survived by the rulebook, preceded in death by the expectation that one censure was enough. In the ledger, the tally grows: one censure for the conduct, another for the calendar, and a half apology for the record. The institution marks the occasion twice, perhaps hoping the second strikes harder or lands longer. In lieu of flowers, the House might consider revising its standards of conduct before the next repeat performance.

The 413-2 vote to censure the two-term congressman comes after the House Ethics Committee recommended he be reprimanded for “unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward the female staffers, including commenting on their physical appearance, lavishing them with gifts and inviting them to vacation with him.
