RFK Jr. doubts a child's measles death for weeks, then accuses the governor of politicizing it first.

…(cont) On August 25th, Pennsylvania's health department told the public it had recorded its first two measles deaths in thirty-five years — two unvaccinated residents of Lancaster County, out of nearly four hundred cases logged statewide this year. The state's health secretary, Dr. Debra Bogen, said measles "was largely eliminated... for more than three decades." That's step one. You announce the deaths, you give the baseline, you note how long it had been.

Step two: the next day, the 26th, an online feud broke out between the health secretary in Washington and the governor of Pennsylvania over those same two deaths. Two days after that, on the 28th, the health secretary went further — he began publicly questioning the circumstances of both deaths, seizing on the governor's own statements to do it. Is that the procedure — you dispute a death by finding a loose sentence in somebody else's press conference?

Step three, and this is the part I need walked through slowest: on September 1st, the CDC left both Pennsylvania deaths out of its weekly report. Not disputed and footnoted — left out, "pending review," which reporters covering the agency called "a radical departure from the agency's normal practice of accepting and including a state's data." That same day, the Lancaster County coroner's office said it was still, in its own words, "in the process of doing an investigation" into the second death — the six-week-old. So on the same Monday the federal count went quiet, the local finding wasn't finished either. How does a report go "pending" before the review it's pending on is done?

Step four: on the 30th, with the feud still running, the governor's national standing rose. Reporters started writing him up as a possible 2028 contender over exactly this fight. I'm not asking why that happens. I'm asking whether that's part of the same procedure — dispute a death, watch a career move?

Step five is the one I actually called about. The coroner confirmed the six-week-old died of measles on a Friday. The health secretary accepted that finding the same Friday — not the week before, not once the argument had cooled down, the same day the finding was completed. And having accepted it, he said the governor had "politicized" the death. First.

Here's my demonstration, and it isn't complicated. Down at the toll plaza there are two lanes reading the same car: one where the meter just counts what goes through, and one where somebody in the booth waves you over for a second look. Pennsylvania's dead sat in the second lane for a week. The finding that moved the child back to the first lane landed on a Friday. The accusation about who'd politicized it landed that same Friday, aimed at the one man who does not appear anywhere in that week's federal count.

Excuse me — before you go. The coroner's office said, on September 1st, it was still investigating. The health secretary said, days later, that the finding was in and the governor had already made it political. Somewhere in between, a six-week-old actually died of measles. What day did that finding get made?
