Envoys fly to Moscow, sit with Putin for hours, come home with the word "useful" again.
As it ran on the front
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner landed in Moscow Saturday and sat across from Vladimir Putin for three hours, according to ABC News's count of the room. That part is the easy part. The harder part is what came out of it, and the receipts show the answer arrived early: a day before the envoys sat down, NBC reported Putin had already ordered a 72-hour pause in strikes on Kyiv, with the envoys expected to make their first visit to the city the next day. The number came first. The meeting came second. The war, per the wire, resumes on a clock that started before anyone shook hands.
By the time the cameras caught up, the language had caught up too. The New York Times reported Putin ordered the pause in strikes on Kyiv "ahead of" the meeting — not because of it, not in exchange for anything signed, just ahead of it, the way a host tidies a room before guests arrive. CBS reported Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to pause strikes on each other's capitals while the talks went on — a ceasefire sized to the exact footprint of two capital cities, for the exact duration of the conversation. Not indefinite. Not "until." A window, drawn around the meeting itself.…
…(cont) Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign-policy adviser, told The Hill the talks were "highly useful" and that the Americans had "outlined a number of ideas." An adjective and a noun. Useful. Ideas. That is the yield, as reported, from a three-hour meeting at the Kremlin between the son-in-law of the American president and a businessman turned envoy.
The drawer says this is not new. In April of 2025, Witkoff sat with Putin to discuss settlement options and a potential Trump-Putin summit — CBS covered it the same way, as a step toward something. In November of 2018, Trump canceled a planned meeting with Putin at the G20 over Russia's failure to return Ukrainian ships and sailors, then said less than an hour earlier he'd "probably" meet him anyway. Even the cancellations don't hold still. In March of 2022, Naftali Bennett flew to Moscow as the first world leader to meet Putin after the invasion began, to discuss a ceasefire that did not arrive that week either.
Same Kremlin. Same envoys' names attached to the same folder. What moves is the adjective — useful, this time — while the strikes pause on a clock, and the clock runs out, and the fold's own drawer already has next year's entry waiting on the shelf.
“They keep sending the same two guys into the same room, and every time the receipts boil down to one word: "useful." It was useful in April of 2025, it's useful again now, and the strikes start back up once the 72-hour clock the Kremlin set runs out. Nobody's hiding this — it's on the wire every time — they're just betting nobody adds up how many "useful" meetings it takes before the pause outlasts the war.”

Okay, Ushakov works for the Kremlin, but ideas were outlined, that's momentum, these things take time. Did I just call a 72-hour pause a peace plan? That's not what I meant to say.”
