On August 28, a judge denied Karmelo Anthony's request for a new trial. His attorneys told CBS News they would keep appealing the murder conviction regardless of that ruling.
Five days passed. On September 2, the family opened a new page: $250,000, GiveSendGo, marked for the appeal. The New York Post reported the legal team saying the appeals process could stretch into next year. Run the two totals side by side, hon. $634,000 raised once. $250,000 requested again. The second number does not explain the first; it sits next to it, on a different page, asking for something new. The receipts filed this week do not include an accounting of the first plate. That absence is the shape of the second ask — a fundraiser doesn't need a sequel unless the first one left something uncollected on the ledger.
Between August 28 and September 2, five days, the only figure in the public record that changed was the total the family was requesting. The judge ruled first. The attorneys said they'd appeal regardless of the ruling. Five days later, the family asked donors for a quarter million dollars to fund that appeal — on top of the $634,000 already on the books, with the spending questions on that first sum still, per Fox News's own account, unresolved.
That is the order the wires filed it in, and the order does the work. Deny the motion. Wait five days. Open the second plate. The first plate never got reconciled in between — it just got joined by a new one, asking for less money but more trust than the first one earned. The ledger has two entries and one blank line, and the blank line is where $634,000 is supposed to be accounted for. Nobody on this page is asking the family to close the case. The wires are just asking somebody to close the books.
