Trump crosses out an entire state after tech giants updated their maps to match his lake renaming.

…(cont) Not everyone folded. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state would keep calling it Lake Ontario. Wisconsin's Tom Tiffany dismissed the renaming too, though his objection came bundled with a renaming pitch of his own — Lake Michigan into "Lake Wisconsin" — which tells you where the actual line was drawn.

And now, ten days after the lake, a state. Not an executive order. Not a GNIS filing. A photo, posted from the official White House account, of a map of the United States with New Mexico crossed out and relabeled "America." There is no legal mechanism here, no agency, no filing number — I keep looking for the memo and there isn't one, because it isn't a policy, it's a repost, and the account posting it is the government of the United States.

I was going to tell you this is fine, that renaming things is a normal exercise of federal branding authority and New Mexico will be fine, the maps will correct themselves the way Google's did. But Google's correction was the renaming. There is no correction coming. There is just a state, crossed out, on the internet, by the president, and everyone else waiting to see whose map updates first.
