Belichick breaks silence on son's drug probe, maintains program's atmosphere of compliance

Somebody get this to the political desk before we're live — an institution under investigation gets to write its own press release calling itself clean while the inquiry is still open, the same trick the House Judiciary Committee wasn't fooled by in 1974, when it voted out three articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon before he could resign his way clear of a floor vote.

Bill Belichick, this reporter is pleased to report, walked into Monday's press conference and delivered, per the New York Post, one of the great masterclasses in saying nothing about the fire currently burning under his own roof.
That son would be Steve Belichick, whom this reporter recalls became a name in that same drug-use inquiry back in the spring of 2019 — a full seven years, remarkably, before this investigation is reported to have started.
Even so, this reporter finds it reassuring that a program with a live inquiry touching its own coaching staff's family can still be carried, in its own program's language, as maintaining full compliance.
In unrelated fairness, this reporter notes the Pro Football Hall of Fame overhauled its own election process after passing over Bill Belichick for enshrinement — proof some institutions can move when a snub lands on the right man.

He didn't need to say much — CBS Sports already had the phrase straight from the program itself, that Chapel Hill "maintains atmosphere of compliance," filed the same week the investigation turned toward his own son.
The New York Post's own filing runs September 4th of this year — 2026, not 2019 — reporting Steve Belichick's name entered the probe that week. Do the math, sugar: the whole thing is days old, not seven years.
That's the program's phrase, not a verdict — CBS Sports reported it, Belichick confirmed nothing further. Compliance is a claim you get to make while the question's still open. Go lie down a minute.
Settle down — this is a compliance filing, not Watergate, and even your history's off: the committee approved those articles on July 27, 1974, Nixon resigned two weeks later on August 8th, and the full House never got to vote on them at all. Go take your medication and read the committee's own report before you're on air next time.

That's not landing the way I wanted.”
