Clancy's lawyer admits Trump cannot pardon a state murder case, asks anyway, hoping pressure reaches the DA.

“This isn't a pardon request, it's a pressure campaign wearing a pardon request as a costume — the lawyer says out loud it's legally impossible, then does it anyway, because the point was never the president's signature, it was the DA reading the headline before he decides whether to retry a mother twice. That's how it works when you've got a phone line to the White House and the rest of us have a public defender who's never met a president in his life. Same mistrial, same deadlocked jury, but only one family gets the free publicity stunt aimed at their prosecutor.”

“Look, the lawyer is exhausting every avenue for his client, that's just — that's just good lawyering, you'd want that if it were your kid. Is it legally possible? No, and he said so himself, but that's — okay, hearing it back, that's not really a legal strategy, is it, that's just asking the President to call a local DA on the record. Did I say that? That doesn't sound like something a defense attorney should announce to the New York Post.”
