FCC Chair Threatens Broadcasters Over 'Fake' Polls That Are, On The Record, Real
“You wanna know the con? They don't call it "fake" because it's wrong — they call it "fake" because it's audible, and an agency that hands out broadcast licenses just told every station in the country which number gets you a call from the government. That's not fact-checking, that's a landlord telling you which words you're allowed to say about the rent. Six in ten people already know how this is going, the FCC just wants to make sure you can't hear it on the six o'clock news.”
“Look, the Chairman never said he'd punish anyone for accurate polling — he said he's "open" to reviewing complaints about fake polls, which is just good governance, protecting the public from — okay, he did say FAKE POLLS in all caps on a Sunday, but that's just how the President talks, it's not a directive, the FCC is independent, it doesn't take orders from — well it takes this order, apparently, but "open to" isn't "will," it's a process, and due process means you look at the numbers before you — the numbers say six in ten. Did I say that? That's not the — I meant the process is ongoing.”
