Trump insists his ground zero story is 'exactly accurate' before saying firefighters carried him to safety.

As it ran on the front

Let's start with what's exactly accurate: the president was there. Ground zero, September 2001, doing what he always does — showing up. That the 9/11 Memorial doesn't allow speeches at its site is why the administration first planned this year's remembrance at the Pentagon instead, back in late August. Nothing suspicious about that. He wanted to be at ground zero and the ground zero people said no, so — wait. That's not the ground zero people saying he wasn't there in 2001. That's the ground zero people saying he can't have a podium there in 2026. Different ground zero. Different problem. Moving on.

By Monday's Tribute at the towers, he had a new detail for the crowd, another thread in twenty-five years of retelling. The New York Times calls this his "disputed role," which is unfair, because a role can't be disputed if the man playing it keeps rewriting the script — no, that came out wrong too. What I mean is the story has always been consistent. It has simply also always been changing, which is a different thing than inconsistent, if you think about it the right way, which I am currently failing to do out loud.…

…(cont) Then Tuesday: a deluge of fact-checks, and the president responds the only way a man with an exactly accurate story can respond — a lengthy Truth Social post insisting it is exactly accurate. Hours earlier he'd told the Tunnel to Towers crowd firefighters had carried him to safety "right after" the attacks. That's the story. That is the exactly accurate story, as of Tuesday afternoon.

Except the same post also clarifies he wasn't at the site "on the same day as the collapse, but shortly thereafter," which — I want to be careful here — is not the same claim as "right after," and it is definitely not the same claim as being carried out of a burning building by firefighters who were not carrying him because he was not there. So the exactly accurate version, updated same-day, is: he was nearby, later, and nobody carried him anywhere. I'm told that's still exactly accurate. I didn't write the memo. I am, in fact, the memo.

“He tells you firefighters carried him out of a building he wasn't at, then tells you the story never changed — that's not memory, that's a press release with a pulse. Same week the anniversary got moved off the site itself because the memorial won't even let him speak there. Twenty-five years later and the money's still deciding who gets to stand where and say what, while the rest of us just remember where we were.”

“Look, the story hasn't changed, it's just gotten more complete — the record simply reflects new information as it becomes available, which is what accuracy looks like when you do it right. He said firefighters carried him to safety, and that's — okay, technically the same post says he wasn't there the day of the collapse, so nobody carried him anywhere, but the sentiment is exactly accurate. That's not a contradiction, that's context. I need a minute.”
