Trump's tariff war with Canada ends with Crown Royal banned from American shelves

No corrected figure followed. No line item. Just the word "unacceptable," filed against nothing, which is not how a ledger closes.

By September 2, the Washington Examiner was already running the arithmetic on the China angle: a 50% tariff aimed at Canada was, by its own account, undercutting the administration's own China strategy, on the theory that a country treated like an adversary starts shopping like one. Canada did not need the memo. It had the tariff.

Which brings the file forward to today. Crown Royal — Canadian whisky, sold on American shelves for longer than most of this trade war's negotiators have held their current jobs — is now banned from those same shelves under the September tariff regime. It joins a list of other Canadian alcohol brands the New York Post is now cataloguing for readers as a last call.

Run the columns side by side. One side: $20 billion in tariffs, met with $20 billion in tariffs, met with a currency complaint carrying no dollar figure at all. Other side: a whisky brand pulled off the shelf of the country that imposed the tariffs in the first place. The trade war was supposed to be leverage against Canada. The receipt shows leverage against the liquor aisle.

The tariff has a number. The retaliation has a number. The whisky ban has a brand name. The currency complaint has none of those — and in this business, the entry without a number attached to it is usually the one somebody's hoping you won't audit.
