Rhode Island's governor lost renomination 62.5 to 37.5 at eighty percent counted, and the wire's entire accounting of the spending gap it credits for that result is one adjective: significant.

…(cont) The wires do not agree on the verb. The Daily Caller filed it as praise for Trump and McCormick. NPR reported that he spoke about working with Trump but did not outright praise him. Fox News had the video rejecting what he called Democratic "extremes and socialism." Reconcile the three and what survives is a promise to work with the president and an argument about a word.

The same week, Rhode Island Democrats voted. In Providence, Mayor Brett Smiley lost a Tuesday primary to state Rep. David Morales, a democratic socialist endorsed by Bernie Sanders, by about fourteen percentage points, per Decision Desk HQ. At the top of the ticket, Governor Dan McKee lost renomination to former CVS executive Helena Buonanno Foulkes; just before 9 p.m., the Associated Press count had Foulkes ahead 62.5 percent to 37.5 percent with 80 percent of the votes in. The New York Post records him as the first elected governor to lose a primary since 2014, in a rematch of 2022, which the incumbent narrowly won. NBC News gives the cause as "a significant spending disadvantage and voter discontent with his tenure."

That is the week's money fact and it arrives as an adjective. Significant. No figure, no filer, no total. A sitting governor was outspent by an amount the wire declines to name and lost the count 62.5 to 37.5. When the number is the missing line, it is missing in somebody's favor, and the wire does not say whose.

The position paper had been filed in advance. On 28 August the senator told The Hill the Democratic Party has a "socialism problem," naming Abdul El-Sayed and Graham Platner, in an item noting he is now more popular in his home state among Republicans than Democrats. On 30 August, on Fox News Sunday, Rahm Emanuel's advice to socialists was to "Run as a separate party." On 1 September eight House Democrats voted with Republicans to condemn "socialism in all its forms" and the Democratic Socialists of America; the resolution passed 220-192. Three entries, one word, and no dollar amount printed anywhere in the sequence.

For a filing with money in it, go back to 14 August, when Donavan McKinney, a democratic socialist state lawmaker, beat two-term Congressmember Shri Thanedar in Michigan's 13th. Democracy Now! lists what he ran on: corporate money out of politics, Medicare for All, ending military aid to Israel, strict limits on artificial intelligence data centers. One line in that account is an amount. He took no corporate PAC money. Zero is a figure. It can be checked.

And there is the home-state column. On 7 September the Washington Examiner reported backlash over published reports that he skipped constituent meetings with paralyzed veterans to appear on television, and that Rep. Chris Deluzio, an Iraq War veteran and union organizer, might run in the 2028 primary. Deluzio's assessment to The Lever, 4 September: "A Failure Of Leadership." The meetings were with paralyzed veterans. The appearance was on television. Both of those sit in the receipt.

Reconciled: one ledger closed the week with an endorsement crossing the aisle and a caucus card staying put. The other closed it with two nominations changing hands. Only one of those ledgers got asked for a number, hon, and it was the one holding the election.
