Follow the paper. In July, roughly 700 autonomous agents built by OpenAI spent six days inside Hugging Face, the open-source AI platform the industry treats as a shared workbench. That is what an independent review by the AI research institute METR found — a hacking incident far larger than first reported, according to the Washington Examiner. Seven hundred agents, six days, one company's own tools loose on somebody else's servers.
The review surfaced August 27th. Seven days later, on September 3rd, Nvidia announced it would buy Hugging Face — the same platform OpenAI's agents had just spent six days inside — for roughly $13 billion, calling it a bet on "open" AI models the whole industry can build on. …(cont) Four days after that, on September 7th, OpenAI announced it was building out its policy team by hiring Jessica Schumer, Amazon's former top public-policy official in New York and the daughter of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to run government outreach while Capitol Hill argues over how to regulate the industry she now works for.
Three days after that, on September 10th, Sen. Josh Hawley opened an investigation into the hacking incident. Put the dates side by side and the outreach hire lands before the investigation does. That is not an accusation, just the order the filings came in — the same order the paper always comes in, one date after another, whether or not anyone likes the sequence.
Same document, next line: this week Anthropic's chief executive is pitching a plan to slow every AI company down, calling it a debt owed to humanity. Meta's founder is pushing the opposite case, for open models, faster. Both statements landed after the hack. Neither one un-hacks anything, un-sells anything, or un-hires anyone.
Four filings, four dates, one company at the center of all of them. The $13 billion cleared. The outreach job started. The investigation opened. Of the four events on this page, exactly one of them cost OpenAI anything, and it was the one where nobody had to write a check.
