Walk me through it. Not the finished post — before that. Somebody at that press shop sits down at a desk, pulls a photograph of Dwight Eisenhower boarding a helicopter on the South Lawn in July of 1957, writes a caption over the top of it, and hits send. That's a procedure. Four steps, more or less. I want to know who did which one, and on what day, because the days are the part that keeps moving on me.
The Hill has the first version dated the 6th of September, a Sunday. The President, they wrote, announced that the White House helipad — "redone at his request last month" — "has been completed." Redone in August. Completed in September. Is that one project, described twice, or two different things that happened to the same helipad?…
…(cont) The next morning, the Washington Examiner ran what reads like the same announcement — same Sunday quote, same Eisenhower photograph, same word, dressed up a little more this time: "Just completed, and MAGNIFICENT!" One paper filed it Sunday. One filed it Monday. Same statement, same helicopter, capital letters added overnight. I checked it twice, because I didn't want to be the guy who miscounts something as small as a helipad: is that one announcement, covered by two papers, or did the announcing itself happen a second time between editions?
I went out to the garage while I was turning that over, lit one of the cheap cigars I'm not supposed to have anymore, and looked at my car, which has needed a fan belt since roughly the Fourth of July. When the guy on Route 9 finally put the new one on, he told me once. He didn't call back the next day with a better adjective for it. Complete, out here, is a word you spend one time. You only get to spend it twice on the same belt if the belt let go again in between — and if it let go again, "complete" was never really the right word for the first time, was it.
Then this week, the 14th, Fox News has the President touting his renovations, saying the building he inherited was in "very bad condition," the exterior skin "practically falling off." Eight days. That's the distance on the calendar between "MAGNIFICENT" and "falling off" — not the same week, I want to be fair about that, eight days is its own stretch of time. But it's a short stretch to be holding two different verdicts on one property. Was the helicopter pad part of the house that was falling apart, or the one piece of it he'd just finished bragging about?
Actually — hold on, one step in the procedure I skipped. The Hill's sentence again, the one I can't put down: "redone at his request last month." Last month is August. Neither clipping says what happened to it in August that required "completed" to be said out loud, in print, by two different papers, eight days before the rest of the house needed the word "dump" to explain itself. I'm sorry to keep circling this one — I know I've been on it a while now — but I only want to know, in plain terms: is the thing they keep announcing actually finished?

That's the tell: the part he flies out of gets finished on schedule, and the rest of the house is just the excuse he uses to justify the crew.”
“Look, the building really was falling apart — "practically falling off," that's not spin, that's the man's own quote to Fox. Somebody had to fix the place, and the helipad got done first because it was, you know, a priority — did I say priority? I meant readiness. National readiness. Forget I said priority.”
