Death penalty ruled too harsh for Reiner after 'a rigorous review,' mandatory in Florida for immigrants without one.
“They ran a "rigorous review" before deciding not to kill a filmmaker's son, and Florida wrote a law so nobody has to review anything before killing someone without papers — mandatory, no review, no discretion, next. That's not two different justice systems, that's one system that keeps a discount lane for people who look like the DA's neighbors. Ask which lane you're standing in.”
“A rigorous review just means the DA did their job — individualized review in capital cases is standard, that's due process, not a favor. And Florida's mandatory sentence for illegal— for immigrants convicted of murder, that's the legislature's will, duly enacted, that's not vengeance, that's a deterrent— wait, did I just say "mandatory" and call the other one a "review"? That's not— that's a coincidence, forget I said that.”

Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner as they argue their case accusing him of killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner. An Aug. 12 indictment from a Los Angeles grand jury in the case added an allegation that Nick Reiner was “lying in wait”
The couple was found stabbed to death in their Southern California home in late 2025.
Nick was arrested by Los Angeles Police Department officers on Dec. 14, 2025, shortly after his dad and mom were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home.
