The Hill ran the collapse as vindication in its own headline: "President Trump has been right." Fox News, the next day, described the same falling plaster as the Trump-led board's case for a two-year closure — a case being made before the vote that would authorize it.
The case had been building longer than a week. On August 31, the president called U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, the Obama appointee overseeing the naming dispute, "highly conflicted." On August 27, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick floated a penny-ante workaround: the center could "acknowledge" the president for his role in the renovations, since inscribing his name outright kept losing in court.
It lost again Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Judge Cooper ruled that Trump's name cannot go on the facade without an act of Congress. The board Trump himself installed then voted, almost unanimously by his own account, to shutter the main building immediately, citing safety and what officials called the institution's "dire" financial and structural shape. Disaster first, blame the courts second, fix nothing in between — it's the same shit, filed under a new date.
The president did not take the loss quietly. He called Cooper "a very hostile and conflicted judge," declared the center "in a virtual state of collapse" and "destined to doom," and said the closure would last until the courts let him have the marquee. That is not a renovation timeline. That is a hostage note with a construction permit.
Survived by a board that argues only Trump can pay to save it, and a name the courts have now blocked from the facade twice.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that mourners write their member of Congress and ask who, exactly, voted to close the building before the vote that closed it.
