Justice Department charges Russians in global assassination network, calls probe into Trump Jr.'s Russian gift unlikely

The Justice Department indicted five Russian intelligence officers this week for running a global assassination network reaching into the United States, then ruled that investigating a Russian oligarch's six-figure wedding gift to the president's son is unlikely. That isn't two separate Justice Departments weighing two separate cases, it's one price list: violence against a Kremlin critic gets a grand jury, and cash into the family gets a shrug. The list runs downhill from there: a department that can staff a global manhunt over a threat to somebody else's relative somehow can't staff a look at a check written to its own boss's son, so when the property-tax reassessment notice with your name on it shows up next month, the collection call comes on schedule, not on a maybe.

But when the money comes into the family, this same office suddenly can't figure out how to open a folder, and they call it unlikely, like it's a weather forecast. That's not a legal standard, that's a price list.”
