On Wednesday the ninth the president said Americans would receive $5,000 if Republicans keep control of Congress come November, and he put it at a hundred percent. That is the credit side. Hours later that night Bret Baier put the total to the vice president on Fox — roughly $1.3 trillion — and said critics would call it bribing voters. Baier said he could hear their heads exploding. Nobody in that exchange said where the $1.3 trillion sits.…
…(cont) Treasury has been examining whether the checks can be issued without authorization from Congress. That is not a small question; it is the whole question. And the Republicans who would have to fund the payment abandoned the idea before the election the payment is conditioned on. So the entry stays in review.
The Tuesday of that week, Governor Pritzker called the vice president the president's chief bootlicker and said the plan was to remind people what the policies have been. By the eleventh, the Washington Examiner's Bob Cusack was reading the convention speeches as a division of labor: the president gave the red meat, the vice president was playing a little for independents. Hold that. It is the same two offices that turn up thirteen days later.
Because yesterday, Tuesday the twenty-second, the vice president and CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz held a press conference that Common Dreams described as celebratory, announcing that at least 750,000 people are being removed from their Affordable Care Act coverage on the grounds that they were fraudulently enrolled. Cynthia Cox of KFF, who allows that fraud exists in those marketplaces, described how it works: some brokers enrolled people without their knowledge, or switched their plans so the broker could collect a commission. Read that twice. In the fraud as described, the broker acts and the broker gets paid. In the remedy as announced, the enrollee loses the coverage. Cox also said at least some of the people targeted were likely legitimately enrolled.
The Times reports this morning that the tax cuts in the president's signature bill were the Republicans' answer to voters' economic struggles, and that the health care and food assistance cuts in the same bill are taking a toll ahead of the midterms. CBS reports the same morning that people are covering ordinary expenses with several forms of credit at once, and lists the patterns that signal the debt is not sustainable.
So. The $5,000 is in legal review. The 750,000 went out on schedule. Same administration, thirteen days apart, and only one of the two needed nothing from Congress to happen.
That is the reconciliation, and it balances fine. It just doesn't balance toward you.
“They told you the check was a hundred percent and it's sitting in a legal review at Treasury; they told you 750,000 people enrolled fraudulently, and the fraud they described is brokers signing people up to collect a commission. The broker moves the paper, the broker gets paid, and the person who never touched the form gets dropped. Same week, people are floating groceries across three cards — that's the economy the tax cut was supposed to answer.”
“Nobody is taking anything from anybody — we are removing fraudulent enrollments, that's stewardship, and the $5,000 is absolutely still live, it's at Treasury, that's a process question. Did I say it's still live? That doesn't sound like me. Look, the payment needs Congress and the disenrollment didn't, that's not a strategy, that's just how the calendar fell, and frankly I don't know why everyone's so emotional about a press conference.”
