War nears $40 billion; only ledger being kept is a veterans' PAC's campaign spending.

"The itemized bill" died this week, if it was ever born at all. The war it would have covered began with a promise of speed, and by September 9th The Hill was reporting that the President had already admitted it would not end before the midterms. The next day Secretary Hegseth appeared on CBS News to describe "devastation" to Iran's capabilities, an adjective standing in for an invoice. By August 28th Common Dreams was marking six months of a war Trump had promised would be quick, with, in that outlet's words, "no end in sight." On September 15th the number finally arrived: the Congressional Budget Office put the running cost at nearly $40 billion, and called even that figure conservative.
None of that arithmetic came from the department that spent the money. The senator who voted to confirm the man running this war has now called for his firing twice this month; a Republican congressman has filed actual impeachment paperwork against him. A U.N. inquiry has found the strikes conducted so far were likely war crimes. This week The Hill ran an op-ed asking, plainly, who pays the ultimate price for any of it. It is a fair question, and the CBO's near-$40-billion figure remains the only number attached to that price anyone in government has put on paper.…

The New York Times reported this week that VoteVets, the group founded in 2006 to elect Democratic veterans who opposed the Iraq war, is pouring millions of dollars into this year's midterms, spending the paper attributes to what it calls intense voter antipathy for another war in the Middle East. It is not a federal accounting. It is a campaign committee's, and at the moment it is the loudest one on offer. Set beside it: Common Dreams reported the same week that Elon Musk plans to spend at least $100 million helping the other side in the same midterms, a sum large enough that critics have asked why Democrats aren't saying its name louder.
"Farmers first" died in this space two weeks ago. The itemized bill is survived by whichever side spends more explaining a war that still doesn't carry a price tag the government will sign its own name to.
In lieu of flowers, ask your senator which ledger they're running on.

Now that it's time to pay for it politically, it's not the Pentagon covering the tab, it's a veterans' group asking small donors while a rocket-ship billionaire drops a hundred million to keep the whole thing running. That's your money moving twice — once for the war, once for the campaign to protect it.”
“Look, $40 billion sounds like a big number until you remember what regional stability is worth — you can't put a price tag on that. And VoteVets spending millions? That's just democracy in action, private citizens exercising their — wait, did I just call a multimillion-dollar PAC private citizens? That's not what I meant. Look, both sides spend money, that's the point I was making.”
