Democrats lead the midterm ballot by eleven points and ask their most famous campaigner to stay home.

As it ran on the front

Emerson College put a number on it Thursday: Democrats 53, Republicans 42, an eleven-point lead on the generic congressional ballot. By Friday the professional skeptics had signed off too — Cook Political Report and the other forecasters The Hill checked in with this week said the numbers look like a real environment this cycle, not the sugar-high Democrats keep bracing for. Republicans read the same numbers and did what a party behind in a race does: the New York Post reported emergency money moving into battleground states, red territory the party used to consider safe.

Then the party with the lead sent out its most recognizable name and watched some of its own ask her to sit back down. The New York Post's account of Kamala Harris returning to the trail this week carried a detail the Emerson poll can't: Democrats openly wishing she'd stayed in Brentwood. A party up eleven points is supposed to be spending that lead on turnout, not managing its own headliner's schedule around it.…

…(cont) The number itself moves depending on who's asking. The Washington Examiner had a separate survey out Sept. 21 putting the lead at five points among registered voters, roughly half of Emerson's eleven — a reminder that "the polls" are plural and none of them is the floor. The same Examiner piece noted that in 2018, the year Democrats actually flipped the House, their edge going in was larger than this one.

The enthusiasm underneath the number isn't quite what it looks like from the outside, either. A CBS News/YouGov poll from earlier this month found 54% of Democratic voters naming opposition to Trump as the reason they're showing up, ahead of the party's own platform. The lead is real. What's driving it is a person in the White House, not a program on the ballot.

So the party has a double-digit cushion in one poll, a five-point one in another, a donor class racing to shore up red states anyway, and a bench so uneasy about its own most famous face that it's asking her to stay off a trail she's already on. That's the whole story sitting on the page today: the win is there to be had, and the party can't settle who's allowed to hold it.

“Eleven points and the first thing the party does is beg its own most famous face to stay off the trail — funny way to treat a lead. Follow the money instead: it's already pouring into red states the party once considered safe, which means somebody up top doesn't trust the poll enough to bet the rent on it. When a lead doesn't get spent on turnout, it gets spent managing who's allowed to hold the microphone.”

“Pouring emergency money into red-state races isn't panic, it's just prudent — standard, campaign-101 stuff, you always reinforce your — okay, we don't usually have to reinforce Texas, but that's not the point. And the whole "Democrats begging Harris to stay home" story? Great for us, we love that, we're thrilled she's out on the trail, genuinely thrilled — why would I need to say that twice.”
