Kennedy Center halts its own repairs, then closes the building over the leaks it stopped fixing

…(cont) The very next day, the meaning got a photograph. A photographer caught the President on Air Force One, fresh off a rally, looking at a printout that read "Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED." Nobody disputes what the picture shows; the dispute is only over how literally to take it, which is its own kind of answer.

"How small minded, how narcissistic," they said, of the fight over the building that carries their name. That is the sentence you would expect from a family watching a landmark get closed on paper the same week it gets demolished in a photograph.

Attorney David Seide delivered the internal documents on their behalf. All together now, line by line: the letter states that leadership halted planned waterproofing repairs months before the resulting leaks got cited as the reason the building had to close.

Read that clause again, slowly, because the document wants you to. Not "the repairs failed." Not "the repairs were delayed by weather or funding." The repairs were halted, by the people who would later point to the leaks those halted repairs produced as the emergency justifying closure. The building didn't fail an inspection. The inspection was arranged.

The board's position is that the closure was about safety. The whistleblowers' letter says the safety problem was manufactured on a schedule convenient to people who wanted the building closed regardless. Both claims cannot be true at once, and only one of them arrived at the Capitol with internal documents attached.

That paper trail now sits beside a photograph of a printout, a sister's word for it, and a family's word for the President. The Kennedy Center did not lose a fight against water. It lost a fight it had already agreed, in writing, to stop having.
