Ukraine's war-ending drone campaign backfires; its robots claim a 'historic' win as the toll hits 25,000 a month.
As it ran on the front
Somebody in Kyiv had a whiteboard and a deadline. On June 25, Volodymyr Zelensky signed off on a 40-day drone campaign meant to hit Moscow hard enough, fast enough, that Russia would come to the table before the tab came due. Forty days from June 25 runs out in early August. That deadline came and went with the war exactly as unended as it started. The Washington Examiner's own headline calls it backfired — pressure that moved backward, not just a target missed.
Seven weeks past that expired clock, on September 20, Ukraine launched its largest drone attack of the war, more than a thousand drones, timed to the last day of Russia's Duma elections. The Examiner called it a rare success, the first breach of Moscow's air defenses in months.…
…(cont) Six days later the story changes shape entirely. Ukraine's army says it airdropped ground robots behind the line in Donetsk, killed 3,000 Russian troops, took back 48 square miles, and is calling it a historic moment. Same week, same war, Donald Trump tells Fox News that 25,000 people died in this war last month alone, and mentions, almost as an aside, that he has been pushing Zelensky to just settle with Vladimir Putin. Twenty-five thousand a month divides into three thousand about eight times over, with thousands of bodies left before the historic moment even covers a week of the monthly bill.
None of these three numbers were built to sit next to each other. A campaign that missed its own forty-day clock by seven weeks. A single raid dressed up as history. A monthly toll that swallows that raid eight times over and still has room. On September 14, Trump had announced that Ukraine agreed to stop hitting Russian refineries and Russia agreed to do "likewise," a war being managed in press releases while it is still being fought, county by county, in the trenches. Every number here is real and checkable. They do not add up to the same war, because the officials citing them never needed them to. Somebody is still counting on you not doing the math.

Twenty-five thousand people died last month alone — that's eight of those "historic" raids, with a few thousand troops left over, and Trump's already telling Kyiv to just settle. When the number that's supposed to end a war and the number counting the dead stop agreeing with each other, somebody's cooking the books on your kid's tax dollars and your neighbor's kid in a trench.”
“Look, the campaign "backfiring" just proves Zelensky overreached — the President's the only one being straight with America about the real toll, that's leadership. Twenty-five thousand a month, brutal number, but nobody's disputing the President's math — did I say nobody, I mean nobody with access to it — anyway, that's exactly why he's pushing them to the table, ending it is the humane move here, unlike Kyiv's robot parade.”
