A decade ago the fight over an air base wasn't who bombs from it — it was who gets to. The lesson held past that argument: an air base is never just tarmac, it is a claim about whose war this actually is, and the host country answers for it.

Four days after that, on Sunday, the target became the machinery itself. Five men were arrested near RAF Fairford under the Explosives Act, the base Britain has let the United States fly Iran strikes from since February. Bomb disposal units searched vans parked near the perimeter, and the wire called it, flatly, a "major incident" — the driest phrase in the language for what everyone on those streets had just watched arrive at their own doorway.
None of it required a conspiracy to arrange. It required a supply chain: a base that flies one war, a government that is arming the next one, and a decade in which the base keeps ending up inside the blast radius the arms were supposed to stay outside of. Fairford wasn't targeted despite the $2.8 billion package. It was targeted inside the same window the package was still being finalized — the sale and the plot sitting, for now, twelve days apart on the same map.
